HEllo Rosie,

Taking care of yourself and making yourself your top priority is not selfish at all! On top of it, it is the best plan of actions. you have a right to figure out who you are and what you want and to work towards it! Plus as you said, you will be better to others once you are better to you!

Thanks for the support. I actually had a moment yesterday where I felt hope that I will get out of this. I am only starting with session 2 of the program this week and was trying to think of all the things I used to enjoy doing but it was harder than I thought. I used to love playing my cello so I might give it a try again.
I have tried my whole life to please everyone around me and make them happy. I guess I was so busy trying to make sure everyone else was OK, that I lost myself in the process. I feel selfish but I really think getting myself better is my biggest priority. I can't take care of others if I can't take care of myself.

Wow, I was really surprised at the amount of responses- this really is a great support group! I went to see my doc today and he was concerned as he expected the tablets to start working after 14 days. He has recommended I take another kind so I will see how it goes. I have to stop taking the Serdep for a few days before I start the new medication and am a bit worried I might feel worse. Thanks so much for all the effort Wildcat, I really appreciate your info. My doc also suggested I go for councilling to deal with my issues that contribute to my feeling so down.

Hi, Rosie... Wildcat did some research for you and you might want to take her advice and not pay too much attention to your husband on this one; take the few extra weeks for Zoloft to kick in and then consider how you're doing mentally.  Maybe your husband was expecting a 'miraculous change' when we know it doesn't work like that with SSRIs. Discuss how you're doing with your doctor in a couple of weeks' time...

Hi! Welcome! You should talk to your doc for any concern about meds. SSRI anyway start working in about 4 weeks from the begining of treatment. During the dose setup is common to feel even worse than without meds. At least for me.
Try to write down how you are feeling and in witch time a day for several days. so your doc can understand if simply you should change meds or adjust dose or simply change the time of the day when you are talking the meds.

Hi Rosie,

Three weeks is not long for psyhiatric medications!  It is VERY important to ask your doctor and drugist/pharmacist the time frames you can expect the meds to begin to take effect... and at what doses...

I took a quick look at your  prescription Serdep  marketed by Cipladoc ... (check the internet the phamaceutical cies give you lots of resources for the $$$ you give them) and the more common name for the med is Sertraline hydrochloride (zoloft).

Usually,  not always,  not for every one, but usually a time frame of 8 to 12 weeks is given by doctors for the medicinal doses to build up in the brain to be effectif.   If you have been miserable for some time with out knowing why and finally have a diagnosis, a valid, medical reason for it it can be a relief.  I soothing of the anxiety that was telling you that you just might be going crazy ... because you could not find the cause to your misery.   But the depression is a chemical imbalance and an series of thinking patterns.  The chemical imbalance is still not restored it will take time to reach an equilbrium then heal.  The program here is meant to help the second half of the problem .. the thinking patterns.

So Rosie,
Contact your doctor or drugist and talk about the time it takes for Serdep to take effect.
Use all the help you can find.  The program here, the pharmaceutical cie who markets your medication, any therapist at your local clinic that has a few hours a month.

Hello Rosie and welcome!  I hope you find this site as usual and helpful as I do!

Medications for depression are like finding the right pair of shoes.  Just because they say they are a certain size and it's your size, doesn't mean they will fit.  Unfortunately, as with many medical conditions, it takes a bit of trial and error to find the right medication.  It is sooooo important that you report these things to your doctor, so you can find the right fit for you!

Good luck on your recovery and again, welcome!
Goofy

Hi Rosie,

Welcome to the support group!  Faryal is right, your medicine doesn't sound right for you.  Please listen to your husband and call your doctor.

Let us know how things are going.
