Thanks for letting me know about gardening in buckets, since it's such a joy to see growth at any level, from an apartment balcony to a huge farm.

I also find I can be creative. Today, as I found that the furnace filters which have metal screening holding the pleated filter, can be reused as fencing. Metal fencing is expensive, and gardening stores make a killing on anything they sell, but the filters are 18 X 22 inches, and I was ready to dispose of them, give me so much pleasure to use. With two sides, that means I have 18 X 6(2 sides per filter) X 22 x 6(similarly 2 sides per filter).

I was going to buy a trellis, and this means I could have a free by putting together these pieces, or I could use it for other reasons, like keeping out the squirrels, etc.

I was so excited doing the arithmetic for this, that it was easy, unlike work or school, since I feel passionate about something.

Mom's feeling miserable, so this helps balance my attempts to help her, since I need energy from somewhere.

Coffee break before I go back to planting potatoes.

In the Harrowsmith Reader is a picture of a man scowling as he hoes. All the rows have markers but not what the plants are but how much they cost. I hope that never becomes a concern of mine. Even potatoes are not free as I add peat moss to the rows to prevent scab. (a virus that needs moisture and a specific PH.) I use my own seed and priority goes to ones that sprout late. I save other seed too because more and more seeds are hybrids that don't breed true.

There is no reason not to garden even if you have to do it in buckets. (make sure they have drainage).

Hugs, I remember one year it was so wet I needed duck boards and rain gear. No mosquitoes though.

I usually have to weed three times. First pass is only to give the plants room, second is to clean, third is so they don't go to seed. Seeds still blow in. Tilling three times before planting really helps. Get the weeds up and use them for green manure. Years ago I did this all with a hoe, then I got a Troy Built, now I have a 6 foot howard on the back of a tractor.

Still I have to plant and with my Arthritis I need to sit a lot.

I've gardened on crutches and now I need a cane for balance. I have a weeding bench that straddles the rows now. It is just a small bench on skids. It works great and raising the rows reduces bending.

I have too many flower beds to weed and water including a mobile one in my manure spreader. Looks good though.

Well back out in the sun to plant some more. New potatoes with butter! Yum.

As I go through my day, the spring and summer, and even fall have become seasons to find rest in the garden.

To pick up the thread "Mind Play", time in the garden has become a way doing something and finding mastery, as well as food. It's even connected to cooking.

It's hard to be afraid in a garden, but I do feel some pressure, since things can grow so fast. I have to be responsive to weather too, since rain can be unpredictable, but I've gardened in the rain too!

I wonder what gardens have done for others?
