Balancing Act

Davit I will let you all know if I give it a try and how it works for me. I have a dental appointment coming up this month and then a couple more after that. So if I want to try mindfulness that would be a good experiment I guess. I haven't studied up on it yet though. Lately I've been a little tired mentally and not ready to get into to it..I had a dream about being at the dentist last night and in the dream the dentist was running behind so I went outside and couldn't find my way back and wondered if I had my dental work done but just didn't remember. Strange indeed. I have been having some trouble with my memory lately. So in the dream I was more afraid of losing my memory than going to the dentist... Anyway now to change the subject. The good news is it went well at the auction and I didn't panic once and it was very crowded elbow to elbow with no where to sit down. Not much of interest there, mostly very low end swap meet merchandise that should have been thrown in the trash. So I didn't find any treasures. They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder..Well that's it for me I am going to rest today..Or maybe go look for a couch..Just kidding I'm not up for that today. Maybe the late March after all my appointments are behind me. Than maybe I will have the energy. I find Exposure work takes a lot of energy and than I need a recovery period before I can more on to something else....I guess I am just rambling on now..I'll take to you later...I am a bit tired today...so it's time to up again....Red..

Note I am not sure if it was the bulletin or the magazine but you can find the article on line for free I know this because I tossed the article out with the weekly trash by accident and just found it on line so I printed up a copy for me to keep..So if you want you and everyone else here can enjoy the article too...Maybe you can put up a link to article...I'd do it but it is not something I have any knowledge of or expertise at doing...Well got to go for now. I have a early day tomorrow. We're going to antique auction. I've never been to one before. It should be interesting. Maybe I'll find a treasure or two....Red:)))

Hi Ashley, Yes I just read about mindfulness last month. I read a article in the AARP bulletin newspaper titled "mindfulness matters", it's in the December 2014/January 2015 issue. It is a very interesting article if you or anyone else wants to read it. Just type in mindfulness Matters AARP and it should come up. Anyway Goldie Hawn the actress and mindfulness was one of the feature stories. She suffered from disabling anxiety and panic for years and practices mindfulness daily. She has started a foundation to help children in school learn how to do mindfulness. They have had wonderful results. Research shows that mindfulness helps with anxiety/depression and it also helps change brain chemistry. This is a positive for any human brain. Meditation is thought to strengthen the cortex, where we make decisions, analyze, feel more connected to others and dream. So yes I have being thinking about learning how to do it and starting to practice mindfulness and adding it to my daily life routine. I think it would be good for me.:))) Red.....

Bread takes me back to a happier time in my life, A time of first love and first heart ache. A time of losing my friends to my older brother because he had a car. A time of finding who I really was. And who I was was not who I wanted to be. I grew out of that ridiculous imagination and moved into the real world. A world of reality. It certainly was a fascinating world. Even dangerous some times. You would think living on the edge of panic for so long would prevent panic attacks. It certainly did not. They came for very good reasons. My world was dangerous and exciting. People I knew got killed doing the same thing. What changed was control. I got too old to do it anymore and had to change worlds. I had to live in a world where someone else made the decisions. After years of constant anxiety and panic I found a way to take back control and end the attacks. I have a system very similar to this program but a bit longer and more detailed. It doesn't matter, it is still CBT. And like this program it works.
It matters not if a person never gets past the Behavioural part as long as they can live with that. The problem is that, that will only stop them not prevent them.
Mindfulness is using cognitive to do behavioural. If that works then do it. It is still CBT. And that is important because no matter how much relief you have now you still need to do the Cognitive part of CBT to get total recovery.

I'm going to download Bread from Itunes.

Red, I hope you try it. I tried it in a group, and the group of people were wonderful, although the process didn't catch on with me. I still use progressive muscle relaxation. One woman made some reference to a musical group called Bread, and I just notice how memorable the music to my life.

Mindfulness seems to be the latest thing but in fact has been around since 1200 in some form or other. Sati translates to memory and if you study memory also you will see crossovers. There are a lot of studies where using CBT and memory has successfully changed physical symptoms in the same way that mindfulness does. In fact your body can not do anything without instruction from your brain. Some things we only have a secondary control over. EG you can change your breathing but you can not stop it. You can think your blood pressure down but it will go back up if it needs to be. I know for a fact I can block pain to a certain extent. Using memory to recall doing it makes it easier.
You can not totally live in the present because the present means nothing without memory to tell you what it means. Even new experiences have to be compared to something to make sense.
But I agree, mindfulness is worth reading and practicing.

That's a good idea Red. You deserve a rest. You have been doing great with all your smart goals. Giving yourself a little self care with peace and rest is always a positive. I've been reading a lot about mindfulness lately. Apparently there is a ton of research backing it's effectiveness for addressing anxiety, depression, anger, high blood pressure, pain management and more. I am not sure why but I just thought you might like to explore this technique when I read your post. Have you heard of it?

Hi Red

One of the reasons I don't like going to town is the masses and it gets worse in winter when like right now it is icy. I've decided to phone the pharmacy and if my prescription is ready I'll go to town and go to the library too. Adding to that balance is the cost of making unnecessary trips. So if I do go then I have to go to the store also but since it is our little general store it isn't so bad. I avoid the bigger stores. The hardware store also sells cat food and kitty litter and they put it in my car for me, so they get my business instead of the big grocery store. The general store doesn't have the right cat food so since the hardware will put it in my car I buy lots at once so I don't have to go too often. This isn't avoidance it is intelligent use of my time. I do stock pile because there are days I can not go anywhere. Besides I prefer to make it a happy outing. And you know how I feel about have to.
I'm sorry to hear you are sore but I think both of us know that is a fact of our lives. I'm better today but yesterday I could have gone no where. And it doesn't matter. Life is for living.
I find it easier to go to town if I have someone to go with.

Hi Davit, I pretty was sore yesterday so I hit the sack early at 630 pm. It was nice to lay down and get comfortable. Still a bit sore this morning but I did get out for a walk. I like to putter around the house too, resting in between tasks. I don't real feel the need to be out amongst the masses. I am perfectly happy puttering around here at home. I have to say going out is very tiring on me. I think that all the noise and close contact is a little to hard on my nervous system..I need to shop for a new couch and chair. Mine are all broke down and not comfortable anymore. They sure don't build things like they used too. Not sure when I'll do it, so for now I'll make due with what I have. Enjoy your visit to the library if you go today. If not there's always tomorrow or the next day....Rest
