Feeling better now!

for 18 år siden 0 481 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Hi, I am guiting in a few days and just thinking about it depresses me. I think that it is anger turned inside out. I am depressed about all that time I spent, money I spent and energy I spent. I exposed my kids to all those deadly chemicals all these years and then, started them smoking too! I have 4 kids and all of them smoked at one time or another and only one has quit for good. (and that was not my influence but a stronger force...a girl) I work out every day and I have lost 60 pounds on weight watchers this year but , I can walk fast, I can work on the elliptical machine and do circuit training but I can't run. I tryed yesterday and got out of breath in a few feet! All because of cigarettes. I guess I am depressed instead of angry because I know I have no one to blame but myself. I didn't start back when no one knew the danger, I did. I was young and I wanted to look grown up. Now, I'm 47 and the cigarettes have made me look older all right! I feel like I could cry. The death of an uncle woke me up.All the men in my family die young from some sort of circulatory problem and every one smokes. We are american indian and it is kind of part of our heritage. That makes me angry too.

Wow! What an incentive. I'd like to hear from other people who have quit. Is your skin better and do you think the aging from smoking is actually reversable a little bit?

Dear mama, The smoke induced ageing is reversible A LOT. I've been a non-smoker (again) now for about 11 days and I'm already feeling the benefits. I've stopped smoking in the past (my longest was for about 5 months)and one of the best things was that my skin got gorgeous after about a month! (It's because your blood stops being sludgy and can get through all the tiny capillaries properly again.) I'm looking forward to that happening again for me! I find that a good tactic is to focus on the positives of non-smoking - we all know what the negatives of smoking are! They're pounded into us everyday by the media etc. I'm focusing on the fact that my skin will look great in about 2 weeks, I'm focusing on the fact that I now have about an extra 2 hours a day, I'm focusing on the fact that I don't have to worry how many ciggies are left in my packet, I focusing on the fact that I put $10.00 in an old ciggie tin every day (I'm in Australia and my ciggies actually cost about $12.50 AUD a packet) & I've got $110.00 already! If I focus on all the negatives of smoking it's almost enough to send me screaming for the nearest shop to buy the biggest packet of cigarettes I can find (but that's probably just me being contrary). Sorry for such a long post (this is my first post) but it's been a bit of self talk as well. Take care everybody Chickstarr :)

Thanks for all your comments - if I can start off such a discussion than I'm happy. A quick word for Mama who says 'Now, I'm 47 and the cigarettes have made me look older all right! I feel like I could cry.' Mama - there is a flip side to this. Other the past few weeks, several people have said to me, 'You look so good, you look younger, your skin looks so healthy' etc etc. Thanks again everyone! Sorry, but that 'Last Post' post really got to me. So I've turned my anger into a positive force. I've been thinking about my old life as a smoker and it makes me angry when I think of all the time I wasted sitting there doing nothing except puffing away like a moron. I'm angry when I think of all the things I could have done with this time. I'm angry when I think of all the money wasted on that 'ten mile long' cigarette. And I'm angry that I closed my ears to any talk of secondary smoking because it made me feel too guilty..... And despite the advice, I keep a packet of cigarettes in the kitchen drawer. Marked 'POISON'. And a (used) ashtray. Which I stick my nose in one in a while just to remind me of what a pleasant little habit I used to have. Sorry to rant. Feeling better now! One step nearer to Freedom, one step away from Slavery. Thank You, Mr.Ed. Just reacted to that post myself in such a way that it will probably get edited. I don't care! You are a very brave man to keep the pack around! Definitely stronger than me!! Keep up the good work; you're a real plus to this site. ;p My Milage: My Quit Date: 2/18/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 98 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 3,935 Amount Saved: $882 Life Gained: Days: 16 Hrs: 4 Mins: 0 Seconds: 2

Mr. Ed Knowing what works and utilizing those tools to stay quit is powerful. If ranting here helps, if knowing your poison helps, then great utilize those tools. Know as well the power in offering a hand (which you do), know the power of love and care and active concern (which you do, otherwise you would not offer your hand). Please know as well how nasty and downlifting and degrading the addict can be. Sounds to me like you are triggered into anger at yourself and my hope for you is that you can take that and shift through to a place where you give yourself all of the wonderful and caring gifts that you give others around here. Cheers I look forward to seeing you at the beach. :) Phillip My Milage: My Quit Date: 2/17/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 99 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,986 Amount Saved: $742.5 Life Gained: Days: 16 Hrs: 4 Mins: 24 Seconds: 24

The difference between can and cannot are only three letters. Three letters that determine your life's direction. Being positive or negative are habits of thoughts that have a very strong influence on life. Positive and negative are directions. Which direction do you choose? Positive thinking is expecting, talking and visualizing with certainty what you want to achieve, as an accomplished fact. Riches, mediocrity and poverty begin in the mind. Reality is the mirror of your thoughts. Choose well what you put in front of the mirror. The mind is the decisive factor in your life, but who decides for the mind? A positive attitude brings strength, energy and initiative. To think negatively is like taking a weakening drug. Positive thoughts are not enough. There have to be positive feelings and positive actions. When you say, "I can't" and expect the worst, you become weak and unhappy. When you say "I can", and expect success, you fill yourself with confidence and happiness. You can close the windows and darken your room, and you can open the windows and let light in. It is a matter of choice. Your mind is your room. Do you darken it or do you fill it with light? Positive thinking and negative thinking are attitudes. They are points of view, and show the way people handle their affairs. Train your mind to think in terms of 'possible' and 'can be done'. When you have control over your thoughts, you have control over your life. Happy thoughts attract happy people into your life. Happy thoughts fill your life with happiness. When you change your habitual thoughts, it is like changing the direction of a train. Affirm the positive, visualize the positive and expect the positive, and your life will change accordingly. When there are difficulties and you feel down, this is the time to visualize, think and expect the positive. Do not let circumstances influence your thoughts and moods. By rising over them mentally, you will eventually rise over them materially. Fill your mind with light, happiness, hope, feelings of security and strength, and soon your life will reflect these qualities. Reading inspiring quotes uplifts the mind. Repeating inspiring quotes during the day, helps to cope better with with every situation that arises.

Hi Mr. Ed! It is so productive to turn anger into a positive force and I'm glad you posted that. As I said in my response to Linda, I don't know why she posted that. But it didn't make me mad. To me, it simply was a reflection of how I used to think and of how millions and millions of people think. It hit us hard because this site is our place of refuge and safety, and we're not used to such harsh reality sneaking its way in here. I think that post had a good effect by making everybody really think hard about their quits and how strongly we feel about them. Call me Pollyanna, but I'm not going to spend a moment of my time being mad that I smoked or regretting a thing. I am only looking forward to making the rest of my life the healthiest that I can. Carry on!
