Top notch thread Mc. Im glad to have seen it. Does anyone know anyone that quit on the very first attempt? I mean I know some are able to quit on the first attempt at the SSC (with a meter, support, etc.) but research tells us that a majority try more than once before the try leads to the aha moment. Yours truly practiced the Mark Twain philosophy on 'quitN' for several years prior to finding the SSC. I quit many a night. I would toss them and say, NO more I am done! The next day I would hold out for a while but eventually cave in by telling myself, Oh forget it. Ill quit later. Over the years I bought patches, motivational tapes, nic gum, etc. Nothing worked for me until I found the SSC and realized that smoking is an addiction. Learning this made quitting easier for me because I knew there was enough information out there (or in here) to learn how to manage an addiction. Heck at this point, I HAVE learned how to manage my addiction to smoking. Ive basically stopped thinking about it except when Im in here. Honestly, the only reason I keep coming is to see you people. Now I'm addicted to the SSC! ha! :) Looking back I think I just needed to know what I was up against. Now, I know WAY too much to ever be able to enjoy smoking again. Im done. :) I quit. (In August of 2005 along with the other Fresh Air Freaks ;)) -- P.S. When I first quit I thought, "Hey, this ain't so tough." I really didn't experience any withdrawal symptoms at all. None that I was aware of anyway. So, after a couple of weeks it was very easy for me to convince myself that I could have just a puff or two on the wknd as a reward, call it a slip & continue my quit afterward. After about a month of that see-saw I realized that I had been fooling myself: Each time I "slipped" I was really starting my quit from scratch again & taking my self esteem down a notch as well. So, I reset my meter & decided that I don't smoke anymore. Period. Something must have clicked right there because ever since then even in the midst of a strong crave, the thought of slipping doesn't enter my mind. Once in a while I'll experience a trigger & think, "I wish I still smoked." But the thought of actually having a cigarette then repulses me. I used to love to light up for the drive home from work but now I immediately remember the reality of it: How it would taste [dry, bitter & chemical-ly] & burn my throat & make me & my car stink. It used to be that when I passed by a smoking area & smelled it I would think it smelled good. Yesterday I passed a smoker & the smell nauseated me for a moment. Now, that being said, I have known a few militant ex-smokers & I would never want to become one of them so I keep my feelings about that to myself unless my opinion is requested [seldom]. Anyway, in my long-winded way, I just want you to know Cuddles & any other slippers out there that, for some of us practice DOES make a perfect quit. You are done practicing now. You don't smoke anymore. Period. MC.... here is another cold turkey backing you up. I too "tried" to quit several times before this last one. God alone really knows how many times or how many years I spent wishing I could quit. Prior to this quit, four days was my record and that was just once. Other than that, a few hours was all I could manage. Once I made it over that initial hurddle, I keep telling myself.. "I've gone xx hours. I'm not starting over now" and I keep repeating that to my self. To this day I say, I have gone XXX days. I'm not starting over now. Yes, the thoughts of smoking come and go and even the taste from time to time. Not smoking is where the real joy is. I love my life as a non-smoker and the person I have become. It has been really tough getting here and some days it is really tough staying here but the reality of it all is that this is where I WANT TO BE. Cuddles, Penquin, StuBow, Nwbkr and anyone else struggling keep the desire going, keep trying until you get it right. One day it will click and you will be right where you want to be. Make your dream of being smoke free come true. I am praying for all of you. Mc, Good point. I think for some of us, it just takes us longer to figure it out, but there are a lot of us who have slipped and have come back to have successful quits. No, it's not easy, but we're doing it! So all of you out there who have slipped or relapsed and are back, I just want you to know that you CAN do this! Crave the Quit! Practice does make perfect Mc. I smoked for 34 years....The last 15 years I tried quitting at least twice a year....Even told everyone I quit during my 3 pregnancies but I didnt really, I hid from everyone and smoked in private...(I am so ashamed of that) But if you keep trying and keep trying, you will finally reach a point of no return and you will just know that you never want to smoke again no matter how strong the temptation is.... Hang in there and keep trying, this could be your time of no return!!!!
