Threads "How I Became Smoke Free" Parts 1-4

I just found this post, hadn't read Pyro's story before. This was so exceptionally well-written that I was completely and totally captivated all the way through. And I burst into tears at the end. Thank you, Pyromate, for sharing your story. It was inspirational for me and will not be forgotten as I continue down the path that you helped to forge. Hello: i am new to this site and have begun my journey 13 days ago. I have smoked for 37 years and now have found the strength to forgo the "pleasure" of this activity. At this writting I am becoming concerned. I always knew that I was covering my feelings with nicotene, but the reality of my mind-scape at this juncture is disturbing. Memories are appearing in my mind and effecting my quit with unusual clarity. In particular I am reliving the pain of my divorce and the feelings of loss that, to this point, have been dealt with by self medicating with cigs. I know that quitting is a very personal issue and all people no doubt react differently. However, perhaps someone out there has had this clarity experience and has a word or two of advice. I am determined to do this and will reach 14 days tomorrow. There seems to be no place to put the grief and pain of that event. As you might expect, I did not want the divorce, but I thought I had accepted it and struggled down the road a bit...Now I do not want to become some kind of backward looking emotional wreck because I do not have "my friends" to help me through...

Thank you...to everyone on this site who read my story. Thank you for the kind words and for making me feel like I have helped you. There is no better reward for a strong effort than to know that I can make a difference in this world and help someone. Today I re-read the 4 part story I wrote nearly two years ago. It was almost as if I was looking down from above at myself as I went back in time. I realize now that I feel so much better than I did when I was toking my life away. As I observe and attempt to help my close friend quit smoking over the last week, I have re-lived vivid dreams and feelings of terror associated with the anxious psycosis of cold turkey. Sometimes I forget that I once was held tightly in the grip of the "black death". Over 20,000 cigarettes I have not smoked. I have saved around $3400.00 in cash. Very astonishing I must say. I wonder what 20,000 cigarettes in a pile looks like?? I know what the cash looks like....I recently threw down 35 one hundred dollar bills for a 2007 Honda 4Wheeler to blast around town on. Figured I would reward myself for all of the suffering....which by the way....only really lasted about 3 months. I feel much more capable now of being a good "quit coach" for my friend after re-reading parts 1-4 of my story. As I read on, my memory was quickly refreshed on the horror of withdrawl and the absolute benefits of being a non-smoker. With that said...I wish all of you brave individuals out there the very best and full success in your battle to become and remain smoke free. Sometimes the process of purging your body and mind of nicotene triggers profound changes in thought process and reveals hidden fears in the subconscious mind. Divorce recovery is a lengthy process and in my opinion much more difficult and involved than kicking the tobacco habit. There are many determining factors to concider before making a divorce recovery plan. The most important factor to consider is this...Are there children involved?? If so the entire divorce profile is changed into almost a form of "holocaust". I have a personal rule of thunb for love/relationship/divorce recovery. Generally...."it sometimes takes 1/2 to 3/4 of the equal time you were involved deeply with the person to recover from the loss". Without knowing how "fresh" your divorce is/was...it is difficult to give advice. A public forum may or may not be the best place to find support. This thread may get deleted because it is "off topic". I believe your nicotene dependence is directly tied to your divorce recovery. I am no expert but somehow survived a divorce and became smoke free. I suggest you may need to get some counciling and/or join a divorce recovery group. Hope This Advice Is Sound And I Wish You Well, Pyromate My Milage: My Quit Date: 2/19/2005 Smoke-Free Days: 687 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 20,634 Amount Saved: $3435 Life Gained: Days: 114 Hrs: 16 Mins: 6 Seconds: 56
