my heart is broken

Oh dear Peanut!!! I'm so sorry to hear that! First of all, don't blame yourself for this. HE made the choice. This isn't your fault. Next, I want you to think back to when you started smoking. You were probably a teenager just like the rest of us... just like your son. Would lecturing and scolding work when you were a teenager? It didn't work for me. I'm not sure exactly what, if anything, would have worked for me... but it's not too late for your son. I'm not saying that you shouldn't do something to try to get him to stop before it's too late, but I don't know that lecturing him or listing out the dangers of smoking is going to work. I really hope that you can talk some sense into your son. Good luck! Crave the Quit! Destroy the cigs! You aren't going to save them for your son, are you? Get rid of them now and then have the talk with your son. I have a 16 year old son. He had a birthday party for a friend in the backyard about 3 months ago. I watched all these young teens walking around with cigs in their mouths. (my son hates smoking, thank goodness). Someone said, smoking is a pediatric disease. You might be surprised how many of your son's other friends smoke. My experience with teens; the atheletes usually don't smoke, the kids who smoke pot also smoke cigs, the musicians usually smoke cigs, the kids that are involved in school, ie dance rehearsal, drama, sports, yearbook staff, photography..these kids usually don't smoke. they have all been educated about the evils of smoking in school. Somehow, these truths need to come alive for your son. You will know what to do. Be honest about the addiction problems that he will face if he continues to play with the fire.

Hi, Peanut. You're far enough into your quit that you can refuse the call. Finding the cigs in your son's room was a jolt and that's what's cracked your wall. It is not your fault. It was a choice he made. If anything, watching you quit should have been deterrence. Apparently, it wasn't enough, probably because at 15 he feels he's indestructable. How about your other son? My bet is peer/sibling pressure would probably carry some weight with him. Hi Peanut, VERY glad to hear that your son was just trying them out and is not planning to smoke again. I agree with Silver. Telling the other parents could not only alienate your son with the other team members, but would make him think twice before coming to you about other matters. If they don't already know, the other parents will smell it soon enough. Not cravin', never cavin'. Peanut, Im so very sorry. Just like us, the teens today have the itll-never-happen-to-me syndrome. Maybe if you talk to your son about how terribly hard it was for you to quit and how it breaks your heart to think of him smoking just maybe, itll get him to quit now while hes young. Good luck. So sorry to hear that your son has made the same lousy decision that so many of us have made. I know it breaks you heart - my youngest son broke ours in Dec. - but on the up side, he has been "clean" since the day of discovery (and yes, I really believe that)!! By the way, Allen Carr writes a great book on helping your teen quit smoking - I really think you should invest it in. He is a great source of wisdom. Stay strong and be strong for your son. Cheers. Well you won't be able to MAKE him do anything......peer pressure to smoke can be tremdous if you are in the right circle of friends. You can talk reason to him....you can use yourself as an example of where smoking takes you. You could show him all the adults on here that wish they had never put one to their mouth...but when it's all said and done, he has to find the desire and strength to say no for himSELF. Don't rant and rave.....we know that only makes it worse...(even for us adults LOL) and continue to be an example of a quitter!!
