Lady,
Part of life is dealing with abnoxious, rude and hard-to-deal-with people... yours is your father... mine is my whole family! :p Be thankful that yours is just one person. Yes, he might be hard to deal with at times, but you did it just fine before and you'll do it just fine again.
Try talking to him... tell him that you don't want the door open. Tell him that you're not asking him not to smoke, but when he does, he must close the door so that the smoke doesn't get in the house. Just closing the door might not be enough of a "hint" for him... he might need some verbal communication. Yes, he SHOULD get the point by you just closing the door, but oftentimes, people don't pick up on subtle hints and need outright frankness. Try talking to him. See what happens.
Next, while you're talking to him, find out how his trip went. He can't yell and scream at the boys if he's busy talking to you about his trip. He might be fussy and yelling because he doesn't have anyone to talk to.
I know sometims we wish things were the way they were, but they're not and we just have to suck it up and deal with it. You're strong. I know you are and I know that you will handle this situation with dignity and civility because that's the kind of person you are. :)
Crave the Quit!
Pam
