Due to my past, I use the VA for my medical care. The other day I went for my yearly update on Oxygen consumption. In my particular case, I generally do not need assistance but on a humid miserable day, such as it is here in Florida, I do have it available. Now, one of the requirements of my continuing in the program was that I would sign a statement that I would never smoke around my equipment. I thought that was about as dumb a thing as I could imagine. When I inquired as to why the form, I was informed that one of the other patients had recently been on oxygen and lite a smoke. It burned his entire nose off his face. Sorry...but that was stupid. Sadly though, it could have been a pitiful individual who was not even coherent. Who know...but nose gone. I recently visited a cancer center to visit a friend. A particular patient had to be moved to another facility for extensive testing. As a fellow, who was dieing of lung cancer lay on the strecther, waited for the ambulance out front, I observed the following: When they hit the door, he had his wife light him up one. Then she, and I persume there children, all lite up as well. Go figure. Is that addiction or stupdity? Think before you answer. Yeah....it was stupid that I let the addiction run my life....the power is within us all the time to get control...but Ole Nic is NOT stupid....he's very very wiley. Just thankful that I got the control now! I had an aunt that died of lung desease....she would lie in bed and smoke and tell me it was killing her and how I should quit?? course when you're young, you're bullet proof.....I watched several family members suffer from the years of smoking....still I didn't feel like it would happen to me? Only when I was quit a couple of months did I begin to realize just what an addict I really was.....just how smoking had been running my life.....just how it was killing me....AND my loved ones. we all kicked it! but we too spent a great many years being stupid. Bubba, I don't think I have an answer! I am in awe! What were they thinking, and I don't think they were thinking! Perhaps the nurse or doctor could of told them not to light up. This shows us the ignorance of the addiction. The stretcher man I can understand, as it may have been his last and the damage now done, but the family could improve on their own knowledge and health. This was obviously not their wake-up moment. Keep Strong, Josie _____________________ The SSC Support Team.
