Hey cuddles, My mom just died from another addiction, alcholism. No matter how much it was explained to her that she would die if she drank, she kept drinking. No matter how much you want to, you can't make someone elses decisions for them. Just know that while she was at her worst, that's when I lost my quit. All you can do is love her (that may be hard) and look after yourself. Just remember that the junkie will start yelling at you soon. Take care and know we are thinking about you. Lots of hugs, Sheller My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/1/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 63 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 887 Amount Saved: $315 Life Gained: Days: 5 Hrs: 7 Mins: 54 Seconds: 33

Hi cuddles, I know that reading posts here and reading at other sites about smoking helped me get ready to quit. I understand your mom sneaking the butts. She has been put in a position where she is forced to consider quitting because of a health condition, instead of making the decision to quit on her own. Maybe if you printed out some articles for her it would help her build the resolve to quit. Hi Itsironic, My mother had dementa which turned into alzheimers. First, she was in assisted living, got too bad and had to move to a care facility. She asked me for a cig one day and I told her that she quit smoking a while ago. She said, "no I didn't". I said, "yes you did". She never smoked again. There was noone to give her any or take her outside to smoke. She was fine. She just repeated for a few days, "I'm nervous, I'm nervous". This works for many alzheimers patients. Her doctor was the one who told us to tell her that she quit smoking, and it worked! I spend my time with her now in different ways. I paint her fingernails or look at photo albums. If she doesn't even know you, it will be easy to get her to believe that she quit smoking. good luck.

Good morning Cuddles: I'm sorry I didn't see this thread sooner. I don't know if you have read any of my earlier posts but I quit smoking at age 79 1/2. The response of my body, copd, energy, etc. was amazing to me and my doctors. I did have a let down a few months ago and in searching the web for a reason why I was getting worse while taking pulmonary rehab (exercising) I GOOGLED "inhaled glutathione for copd". I found interesting reading and pursued the suggestion. I then took the information to my doctor and pursued the treatment. That was two weeks ago and I have had much improvement. This is just for your information and perhaps you could print out some of my earlier posts to show your mom that even now it might be helpful to quit smoking. My prayers are with you and your family, Cuddles Hugs, Nan My Milage: My Quit Date: 4/18/2005 Smoke-Free Days: 319 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 7,346 Amount Saved: $1212.2 Life Gained: Days: 39 Hrs: 22 Mins: 7 Seconds: 56

Cuddles sorry to hear about your mother. I just find it very interesting how the nicodemond never leaves the mind. I had a friend who had a stroke and could not remember anything but she did remember she smoked and nobody told her. Keep strong. Cuddles, so sorry about your Mom. So many of her physical problems could change for the better if she could just beat this addiction. Here's hoping she can overcome her fear of withdrawal to do what is best for her. And here are hugs for you. (((((Cuddles))))) Rusty

Cuddles, this is one of the most powerful threads I've ever read on this site. After your first post, I was thinking about someone whom I love very dearly, who would be just like your mother. If he had a heart attack, I'm sure he wouldn't change his diet or exercise or quit smoking or anything. It is so hard to watch our love ones go through such suffering, but there is nothing we can do but love them and pray for them. (((Cuddles))) Rusty

Sadly, your mom is just one of those 40,000,000 just in the US alone who do not know why they continue. Would they like to quit...deep in there hearts and soul they would. Yet, on the surface the monster is so strong it masked reality. Here hoping that mom can have a little peace. COPD is a tuff way to go. God Bless you and your family.
