There are some really good responses here. Does anyone else have anything to add? I have often said that I am not the same person I was before I quit smoking. When I smoked, I was bitter and had a short temper. I really didnt want to be bothered with anyone (ever) and was perfectly content in my own little world, sitting on my deck smoking my life away. I didnt have any relationships nor did I want any. I wonder if I am the only one who has noticed a change or do other quitters go through the same thing. I believe a different part of me has been awaken by this quit. I am now more caring of others. I have allowed people into my life. Before I quit, I stayed to myself and blocked everyone out for what I called my own protection. I dont know if these changes are caused from quitting smoking, an attitude adjustment, my sphere of influence, motivational reading, spiritual growth or a combination of all of the above. Whatever the cause, I am glad to be experiencing the changes. My confidence has boomed and I am realizing that I lived in such a negative world before. When I stop and think about it, my life was really sad. My life now is full of positive influences and my future is looking better than it ever has. As a matter of fact, the life I am living now is probably the best it has ever been. My question to you, my fellow quitters, is: Are you Different? :quest: My Milage: My Quit Date: 7/1/2005 Smoke-Free Days: 375 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 7,517 Amount Saved: $1312.5 Life Gained: Days: 33 Hrs: 2 Mins: 57 Seconds: 23

Lady, Great topic! I'm sure this is one that many newbies have questions about. Many times I read posts from new quitters about how their life just plain sucks but then I also read posts where people, like you, talk about positive changes. I don't know if I'd use the word "change" here. I'm more inclined to used the term "adapt". Humans have flourished on this planet partly due to our ability to adapt to diverse living conditions. When we quit this addiction called smoking, we have to adapt to a new lifestyle. I suppose that during the adapting process, changes do occur. Perhaps I'm being picky here about the semantics. Whether a person "changes" or "adapts", most smokers lives are impacted, usually in a positive manner, when they quit. A song by The Wallflowers, One Headlight, has a lyric... Man, I ain't changed, but I know I ain't the same That sums it up for me.. ;p Life is good. :) Be Strong. Be Smart. No, Lady, I haven't changed one whit. But I am totally awed by all the changes the rest of the world has gone through. :8o: All kidding aside, yes, I have. Considerably. And I expect the changes to continue for some time yet. I'm not talking about the physical changes, although there have been some and they are all good. I'm talking about changes in my emotional makeup, my belief systems, and my self image. I'm still learning to deal with life's challenges without rushing off and hiding behind a smoke screen. Got a lot of things whipped, but I still tend to have a hair-trigger sometimes. And once riled, I don't cool down near as fast as I should, or used to. But I'm making progress with the help of IM and some good friends. As I said in my 1 year ramble, things I have begun to enjoy things I used to not care at all for, and things that used to be very important I have no further use for. This is the shift in my belief systems. They are too numerous, and in some cases too personal, to list here. The self-image thing I just decided to cover in its own thread. But I will say here that mine is recovering nicely. As I am a kindergarten teacher, I always had to smoke as little as possible and some days I would be really "good" and not smoke until 6pm. It is only since quitting, that I can see that I was going through nicotine withdrawal every single day!!! and it was making me so emotional and tearful and not knowing why, the more I was able to "control my habit yet still smoke" I am a stronger person now and proud of myself. Thanks Lady this should be a very good thread. I would like to address this question as a couple. Since Roxanne quit we have never been happier, more satisfied and in great spirits no matter what the challenge. We are now working as a team and I mean that in the fullest sense. I would be really lost with out her help and sharing. Prior to her quitting we never had that feeling of being a real team. I know that she had tried many times to quit and just was not quite there yet and I let her know that it was ok, that she would know when her time was here and it has happned. Tomorrow we will be quit 5 and 17 months each. It is nice having her anni on mine, makes it easier to keep up. I think my own personal life has improved and I feel more respected and confident. Just knowing in the back of my mind what I have accomplished gives me an extreem edge in business dealings. I am sharper more alert and even though next week at this time I will have obtained the sweet age of 73. I think that is a kung-fu party year or may be a chase the girls around the park year, what ever I will have fun. This is an interesting thread because no one here has changed, just their circumstances. You are the same person you were and are now just enjoying all the benefits that go with not smoking. Actually...no. And I just double-checked with the hubby. ;) (and he very diplomatically didn't mention the physical aspect!) Lady, another great thread! I am different than I was when I smoked. I am much more aware and conscious of my thoughts and feelings. Maybe because I'm not (figuratively and literally) hiding behind a cloud of smoke. Quitting smoking was like taking a step onto a train to a new me, a new life. I have energy to do all kinds of things. I have time and motivation to do them. I used to sometimes write about my goals...do volunteer work, get my finances in order, improve my health, yadda yadda. Well, since I quit smoking I've been doing those things rather than just write about them. I have to completely agree with you...the life I am living now is the best I have ever had! Little did I suspect that quitting smoking would have such a major impact.
