I agree with Marie, they are protected b/c of the tax dollars. Why aren't law makers putting that money where it would be most beneficial to the taxpayers buying the cigarretes. I.E. Cancer research, and free clinics, help for those who need it, to stop smoking. The addict will pay any amount for thier nicotine fix. EVERYONE involved is greedy, not just big tobacco. 2nd thought... Did big tobacco start this problem? Did the farmer start this problem by commercially growing the tobacco? Why isn't there a class action law suit against them as well. Did the chicken or the egg come first?? Anyway that's my 2 cents worth.....
I think if we were smoking tobacco that farmers grow we would sure be alot better off then the tobacco that has all the chemicals added in it from the cig companies.
There will always be nicotine, no one is suing the the makers of the NRT products. The bulk of the cigarette is in the shredded dried tobacco leaf. It's been the main ingredient since its discovery. Nicotine is an oil contained in those leaves. I'm sure they are adding extra and then some. However, no one is adding nicotine to lettuce leaves and smoking that. So my point is, why has no one sued the commercial farming industry for supplying the the main ingredient. In my opinion they are a business and just as responsible. There are other lucrative alternative crops to grow in that type of climate. Could it be government encouraging tobacco farms to grow this for tax incentives, special FDA programs? They certainly don't encourage the growth of marijuana. In the U.S. we hunt down and destroy the marijuana plant. Why the preferential treatment to the tobacco plant? P.S. I'm really not on a soapbox but I think I'll go do some breathing exercises anyway. This just gets me fired up. Go to the source of the problem, not the supply. Good subject.

I agree with most of you. It was a stupid decision to start smoking and one I regret, but it was my decision. Big tobacco may have tried to hide the facts, but when I started smoking I knew it could kill me. I knew it could (and most likely would) cause serious health problems for me. I still started smoking. It was my decision and it's a cop out for me to blame big tobacco. There is way to much of people not taking responsibilty for their actions nowadays. Big tobacco may be evil, they may have done a lot of things to help people get started smoking, but they didn't light that first cigarette for us, or make us smoke them. Though I could go on with this subject I think I'll leave it at that. Thanks for all the input. Sterk I agree with you. Tobacco was first cropped by American Indians. They smoked it as part of rituals. The rolled cig caught on in the 1800s. First only the rich smoked becuase it was expensive. Then cigs were traded to England and other countries. At first alot of people smoke to look cool. Big tobacco companys formed in early 1900s. Getting people hooked. After WWI the tobacco industry boomed. It was nonstop after that. At one point when the first lawsuits surface, this is when supposed nictotine levels went up. HHmm having to pay alot of money, so we get more people addicted to cover cost. I think they should have to pay for their lie and manipulation. Well one day they will. When I started I did not know about all of it. Nor did I care. I always have smoked the light cig. Not becuase I thought the nicotine level was low, I thought it was a flavor thing. Honestly it was not until recently I knew much of a difference. I have learned more about cigs in the past 6 months then I ever Knew before. Don't get me wrong I knew they were harmful to me. Ok that is enough ramble. Grace

Sometimes I think the big tobacco company's are the ones selling the nrt's. Also a thought to add to Ness. In some poorer forign countrys, they use some of thier best fields for the growth of tobacco. When most of these fields could be used to produced food to feed that country. Instead they farm tobacco, it makes them more money. But it keeps the country poor. Mainly becuase people are buying smokes instead of food. Grace

Well most of you may have heard the news. In 1990 big tabacco companies started putting more nicotine in"light cigs." Now a judge has ruled anybody who has smoked these light cigs can get on board for a lawsuit. Now I am not one of those people to blame anybody else for my mistakes. I was just curios how a big law suit might effect the big tabacco company's. Would a lawsuit even hurt them? Would they just raise the price again to cover it? Would they lay off employees who are merly pons in there master plan. I wonder how many people it would take to make a differance. Is it even worth trying to send a message to them? I would love to hear other opions on this topic, or any other info you may have. Grace

I think if we were smoking tobacco that farmers grow we would sure be alot better off then the tobacco that has all the chemicals added in it from the cig companies. What really gets me is these companies are getting teens addicted faster by bumping the nicotine up and then they turn around a run these commercials how to talk to your teen about smoking oh please give me a break. Its all about the all might money demon and every part of our goverment is taking there share of it while they say they care about are health And then you have the cig companies CEOs get up on the stand and say cigs are not addictive lies, lies, lies. Yes it is my chooice to smoke but when I started I was not informed that this was addictive nor of all the chemicals that were in cigs. I thought I could quit at anytime no problem I guess i was ill informed.

Grace, Excellent post! This really gets me thinking. Personally, I am like you... I'm not one to blame people for my smoking... I knew all of the dangers of smoking when I got started, so I can't blame anybody for my stupidity. However, the point you raised about suing tobacco companies not for the money itself, but to "punish" the tobacco companies is a very interesting one. I never thought about it that way. What an interesting concept! But you're right... how much would that really affect them? Well, in my opinion, in certainly can't help them. So what harm could it do to be a part of it? If you've been affected by higher nicotine levels in light cigarettes, I don't see why you shouldn't take part. That's just my opinion. Crave the Quit!
