hi CUDDLES, i KNOW what you are thinking because I have a child that smokes once in a while...not that young, though. some great suggestions.. a report for a week. A serious interview with a non smoker...you. they identify with the ones that the love. You are alright. Handle it, squash it in the bud! As soon as he walks in the door see if he passes the smell test. Smell his clothes and his hair. I suspected my 16 year old of smoking, he gets the sniff test a lot. He is not smoking but some of his friends are. I don't care what they think, both my kids will get the sniff test until they are grown and moved out. My first job is to protect them, my second job is to be their friend. My son states that's not fair, that if he's in a car and someone else smoke that he'll get in trouble for it. I told him, that's right, you will. I explained the danger of second hand smoke and told him I don't want him in a car with his friends smoking, it's not allowed. I told him it's pretty simple, that if he comes home smelling like smoke he's in trouble no matter how he got to smelling like that..... I know your heart sank when you found those. Get ready for "They're not mine!" ;) You've been given such great advice already and hopefully it will be what works for your daughter. But...with all that being said, I had the knowledge... and it didn't make a bit of difference to me when I started smoking. :) You can give her the opportunity to stop but don't be disappointed if/when she doesn't. She may tell you she is...but watch closely. The longer she smokes, the more addicted she'll be. You can tell a 3 year old not to cross the street...but when they step off that sidewalk, you don't wait to see if they make it... you run and snatch them back to safety. A child's brain isn't fully developed until the age of 20/21. They're not ready at age 14 to always make wise, rational decisions. You have a narrow window of opportunity to teach here... because once they get those car keys... they're gone and out on their own much more. If after you've tried talking it out... For those kids that have a little rebellion in them (like I did...and hopefully your daughter doesn't!), a bit of tough love may be in order. Give her a "heads up" to let her know you have a ZERO tolerance policy. Make consequences swift. Enforce them every time you find evidence...or even when you just smell it on her (this will at least keep her from being confined with smoke and at a distance from those friends that do). Does she get an allowance? Dock it. The next time she wants new clothes... the next time she wants on the computer... the next time she wants to go with her friends... Wait, which of her friends smoke? What else do they do?? Move up her curfew... Whatever she values, if she's smoking...let smoking ruin it... just like smoking ruins our lives. I sure feel for you as she enters into the active teen years. It's a hard time for moms and daughters. My kids have gone through all that. I survived (barely)..but thank goodness neither of mine smoke. Luna had one of the best suggestions of all... pray. Please let us know how it goes.. wishing you the best! not so much lectures as 'facts' about nicotine addiction. your daughter is at the threshold of finding and showing her independence (boy do I not envy you LOL) go easy on issuing ultimatums....they can come back to bite you in the butt. Help her to CHOOSE rightly here....then work it like you are LETTING her make the choice. ;) katy
