paxil: anything to worry about?

Wow. Thanks. You sound like you're really educated on drug treatments. I'm reading a book on it now. Yes, you are correct, I don't have panic attacks anymore, but I do get some anxiety. When it's in the morning, it can be pretty intense, but the Xanax makes it go away. For the past few days, I've been taking Immodium and that helps, too. I hope you're doing ok. Are you on another SSRI now?

The withdrawal time is different for everyone; some people do have withdrawal symptoms and some do not. The drug acts on different people differently (this is a prescription). Remember Lexapro is also prescribed for IBS (irritable bowel syndrome). So the dirrhea you have could be result of the drug or anxiety or both. My (uneducated) opinion is that the drug change your regular panic attack symptoms to diarrhea (you've probably stopped having panic attacks). My best advice is for you to wait a bit longer. My panic attack symptoms changed from chest pain and chocking to muscle tension when i was on zoloft. I had a month of withdrawal after only 3 weeks on zoloft.

Thanks. I actually was told by my doc to stop cold turkey since I was only on it 1 month. It's been 2 weeks now and I still have the diarrhea every morning and sometimes (like today)I woke up sick to my stomach. How long do the withdrawl symptoms last - or is this a result of my anxiety? My doc told me only 4-5 days...

Dear sts: Lexapro and Paxil are almost the same thing, both are SSRI. If you feel really bad, you should take paxil, but it should be taken as a last resort. The main problems with SSRI is not the treatment, its the withdrawal. If you willing to try SSRI, try Prozac because it has a longer half-life, thus easier to withdraw. The main thing we see with SSRI is the original (or new) panic attack symptoms often come back after people stop taking these medications. These medications designed to treat (not cure) the PD. Hopefully you've tappered-off your lexapro slowly, if not expect more withdrawal surprises, although the half-life of lexapro is fairly decent 27 - 32 hours. As for right now stick with Xanax, if you feel groggy or sleepy afterwards that means it works, and continue your psychotherapy. Panic Attacks do not disapper over-night, mine last about 2 weeks, but when they are gone you feel twice as powerfull because you've survived them without meds. Also they become less severe with time, your brain needs time to correct these abnormalities. I hope my advice helps.

I'm supposed to start Paxil in a few weeks. I tried Lexapro for a month and I was so ill (diarrhea, nausea, night time wakefulness, tremors, jitters) that I lost 6 six pounds, spent every morning sick on the sofa until noon and lived on toast and soup. I've been off for over almost 2 weeks. I had my first attack in months this morning. I'm really trying to avoid going on the drugs because, 1- I'm scared I'll be so ill again, 2- I've got little kids to care for and I can't be sick every morning, 3 - side effects that I hear and read about - I'm very sensitive to drugs, too and 4 - withdrawl. I have Xanax .25 mg. and I can usually get away with 1/4-1/2 tablet when I'm stessed or feeling an attack. I took 3/4 this morning at 6am and I was so groggy, I couldn't get up until 10am. I have a new, female psychiatrist (instead of a male psychologist) so only one person can manage my meds, talk therapy and "mom" issues. I'm hoping she'll have some different ideas.

I began having panic attack occasionally about a year ago. As a direct result I became really depressed. I went to my regular GP and spoke to him about the depression, and he put me on 20mg. of Prozac - I had used Prozac once before in college with good results - so I wasn't at all worried. The problem was that I wasn't totally honest. I was too ashamed of my anxiety and panic attacks at that time to really talk about it - so Prozac sent me into a spiral after about 4 days - I had more panic and anguish than ever. My boyfriend called the dr. and told him the whole story - he immediately switched me to Paxil and warned me that the first few days would be difficult as although they are both SSRI's, they work differently, and Prozac takes longer to leave your system. I had a week of the worst anxiety, panic attacks, etc. of my life. On the ninth day, it was as if everything was back on track. I feel much better and I take 30 mg. of Paxil a day. My new psychiatrist keeps me at this dose because when you are doing CBT it is better to feel some apprehension, otherwise you don't really "know" if you are achieving your goals. I know this was long, but hope it helps - I can only say from my own experience that starting right away on a high dose of Paxil might not be the best idea - rather to gradually build up your dose. Good luck! Wingo

I was on Paxil for a year, and gained a SIGNIFICANT amount of weight... almost 40 LBS! So (without telling my doctor) I stopped taking it COLD TURKEY... NOT a smart move. First the medication needs to be tapered off. Second, I have had the WORST 2 months with panic attacks CONSTANTLY... The Paxil is a FANTASTIC medication for the Panic Attacks, and I wish you the best of luck! : )

I'm on Paxil CR (20) It's okay, but yes coming off it sucks and if you work and you plan in the future to come off of it plan on taking sometime out of work. Aside from that my panic attacks vary, sometimes I'm happy go lucky other times I'm not:( only you will know how you feel on it:) GOOD LUCK:)

The first night I was on Paxil I landed in the emergency room with the worst panic attack ever. However, I believe i'm just sensitive to meds.... The 6 months I was on it was wonderful. It really pulled me through a bad time. Getting off was not so good. I did a very slow withdrawel and my biggest complaints were dizziness, headaches, nauseau etc. Depression for a few days too. WHo knows how much has to do with me and how much has to do with Paxil?

I think if you are going from Prozac to Paxil you should be fine. They are both SSRI€™s and closer to each other than any others in that group; so I€™m guessing you won€™t feel too much of a difference.
