I'm the same as Duffis. I don't get those thoughts. I could smoke a cigarett right now and be right back at 20 a day. I believe I will always be at that point. Addiction is different for all of us and mine is located just below the surface of my quit. I still think about smoking daily, usually after mundane tasks. It's not a crave, it's a thought or a wish I guess. I'm not going to smoke though. Quitting is the greatest achievement of my life. Phreak, I'm going to be honest with you... I still get those thoughts every once in a while, but they are very rare now. I also know that even when I have one of those thoughts, I won't smoke. I might THINK that I would, but I know for a fact that I won't because I have had cigarettes in my possession in some of the most trying times in my life in the last few months, but did not smoke them. I did that to prove to myself that I am stronger than the addiction. I bought the cigarettes so that I could destroy them... so that I would be the one in control... not the cigarette. So, I know that I won't... even if my mind thinks that I will or that I want to. Take comfort in the fact that you won't... don't worry about the fact that you could becaue we all could smoke at any time. As we go on in our quits, we get more and more comfortable with the fact that we won't smoke. Sure, any of us could pick one up at any time and smoke it... but that's the difference between the lifelong quitters and the ones who relapse back into their addictions. Lifelong quitters CAN, but they DON'T. I think you're a lifelong quitter. What do you think? Crave the Quit! Ok there is an old addage that goes "practice makes perfect" Well when it comes to quitting an addiction try and rember that it really goes like this "practice makes permanent!" If you rise every morning and make a big deal out of choosing (1)smoke or (2)not to smoke. It is your choice, no one twists your arm, no one here at this site controls your actions so if you make a conscious decision not to smoke each and every morning upon arising then it becomes "permanent in your head" and thus it does get easier and you will arrive at a point where you don't even think about smoking anymore. The only time smoking comes into my focus is when I visit this site to help others then it only last as long as I am here. When away from the SSC I don't even come close to smoking or thoughts there of. I can go to bars, dance, drink, shoot pool, mess around all the things that used to go with a cigarette. Now I enjoy the same things but smokeless and the pleasures are doubled. So in answer to your question, I will say yes you will get to a point where you are free, free and free from this monkey on your back. How long it takes you depends on how hard you train your mind not to smoke. Hope this is of some value to you and I also hope that your road to freedom does indeed become easier day by day, one choice after the other until you are free at last. phreaknbz, your title made me think of that Rolling Stones' song..."It's just a shot away." Sometimes when I get one of those desires for a smoke, I say to myself...how about a little heroin instead? It's easier to kick, I think. Anyway, that tells my addicted self where to go! On another site, someone said if you are going to light one, go ahead and stick the whole pack in your mouth. There's no such thing as just one.
