In Case of Emergency...

Good point. My last quit (90 days?) I hid an unopened pack, just in case. The just in case happened a week into it. However, hubby had found them and got rid of them. That was good. I ended up slipping anyway, but you are right. If they are readily available, it is easier to slip. Several times when I was about to slip, the fact that I had to go out to buy them was a negative factor. By the time I got ready to go, the urge had passed and I felt stupid, My Milage: My Quit Date: 8/23/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 12 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 638 Amount Saved: $96 Life Gained: Days: 1 Hrs: 7 Mins: 31 Seconds: 12

I love your response, Trish! So honest, so refreshing... Like SSC could see that pack in your glove compartment. I even like your junkie thinking...in case I get into an accident! I never thought of that one! What a hoot! Throw the damn things out now that you're busted! :p

Rusty This is great. I am very glad that I threw everything away: lighters, matches, smokes. No butts, nothing, everything went into the garbage. I am so glad that I particularly don't have a lighter cause then I have to ask that stranger for even more. Making the act of smoking very inconvenient and very laborious has been a god send for me. I relied so heavily on the quick fix. Now there is nothing quick and I can't even bum a smoke without having to ask for a light. By the time I have done all of that and gone through the thought process I have gone past the whole thought of smoking and got back to being able to breath and not choking and gagging on a nasty smell butt. Cheers Phillip Through out all that smoking pariphanalia it is useless and dangerous. Kind of like keeping a can of gasoline under the kitchen sink, just in case.???? :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 2/17/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 199 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 3,988 Amount Saved: $1492.5 Life Gained: Days: 32 Hrs: 12 Mins: 5 Seconds: 9

I did just as you advised, Rusty. Monday morning, 5/23/05, I dumped the ashtrays that were full of 1/2 smoked butts into the trash can, and put the trash bag into the large trash container that the city dumps. By Wednesday morning when the can went out to the street, I was fine. Then Thursday evening and Friday morning I found myself regretting that the trash was gone, thinking I could probably find at least ONE in the garbage that was still smokeable. GAAAAAAAH!! I THOUGHT THAT??? GROSS!!! Q@$#!@%!addiction!. Ended up thinking how good it was that they were gone or I'd have likely blown my quit. There will be NO EMERGENCY worth smoking for, so you don't need any emergency supplies for smoking. Planning for an emergency smoke is PLANNING FOR FAILURE. Why would you plan to fail? Keep up the good quits, everyone. Great post Rusty. I too kept a pack of cigeretts in the frigde. I even kepted my ashtray. I actually had anxiety when I thought about getting rid of my " Emergency stash". It was about 6weeks into my quit before I felt confident enough to rid myself of the nasty things. The point is, sooner or later you will be confronted with this very important decision. Save yourself a whole lot of anguish, and rid them from your grip from the start. Amen to that, Rusty! The day I quit, I felt that if I kept mine around that it meant I wasn't truly serious about quitting..that somewhere in my mind I didn't think I'd really do it. When you quit, you should quit with the intention of forever... "There is no try...only do". Having some basic knowledge about what happens when you quit comes into play because then we know to expect some rough times and learn to deal with them other ways... not by having a stash of cigarettes "just in case". We've all seen that some people do keep that last pack as some sort of reminder, I guess of the fact that they're constantly choosing not to smoke them...but what a dangerous thing to have around. I have to question if it's worth it... and I think deep down that it's probably still a "security blanket". If you want some kind of momento, use the old ashtray as a candle holder and the old lighter to light it. Trash those cigs! Princess, sounds like she is wistfully hanging on to false memories. But you never know...maybe she heard you and she will throw it away! Let's hope so.
