Healing Question Here!

Debbie, Maybe it has something to do with how long and how much you smoked. I started smoking when I was 16 and quit the first time at age 32,(1982) my chest was bothering me and some other reasons for the quit. Stayed a non smoker for TEN YEARS. I coughed up gunk then (plegm with rust colored spots)... but only for a couple of weeks, I quit again as you can see on my quit meter below, and was coughing pretty bad (part of it was some respiratory thing, but most was smoking)...the cough has cleared up and the gunk has stopped too. so...my average smoking time was approximately 16 yrs/2 wks cough-up @ 2 packs a day (this last time 2 1/2 packs day) Anyone else have some imput on this? auntdeb My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/1/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 19 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 988 Amount Saved: $90.25 Life Gained: Days: 2 Hrs: 17 Mins: 16 Seconds: 47

I think it depends on how much crud you have in your lungs at the time you quit. I cough some but I haven't had anything come up that I feel compelled to write home about, per se. Like someone above said, you can trust that you ARE healing. I know that for a fact. Hi all, I'm at 80 some odd days in my quit and I have a nagging question that I hope you can help me with. I've asked my doctor already and he had no clue! Of course, he was never a smoker. So, my question is, when will I begin to cough up the crud from my lungs like I see so many people commenting on here? I know it hasn't happened yet and it's not something I'm looking forward to BUT I've heard some say that when you do begin to cough up that stuff, you know your lungs are healing. Is that even true? I just want to know I'm healing! Or does that coughing up not happen for everyone???? I know our quits are all different but I'd like a little reassurance here, okay? Thanks. 52 years here and I coughed up stuff like crazy while smoking. Sense I quit very little hardly at all and I have Emphysema. I think it gets cleaned out in other ways. Chicknoodle, Just as Rusty said, some begin coughing a few days or weeks into their quit and some never. Every quit is different. Remember, all the withdrawal symptoms you experienced in the beginning were signs of your body healing and readjusting itself. Danielle ________________________ The SSC Support Team

Aunt Deb, Although there is no conclusive evidence, this is quite plausible. You also have to take into consideration that everyone's bodies are a little different in terms of genetics and current state and as such will heal a little differently. Hi Debbie- You are definitely healing, friend... no doubt about that - just look at your amazing meter and imagine the ways your body, mind and soul (and spirit are healing)... I never coughed up anything at all, and we know all Quits so different. I am wondering what the need for reassurance is really about... Think about it. You're doing beautifully - where is the part that's missing...? Debbie and Aunt Deb, I smoked over 17 years, the last few years averaged 3 packs a day. I didn't cough up any gunk after I quit. From what I've heard in here...it's just one of the many sypmtoms you may or may not have. I am just tahnkful it wasn't one of mine! ;p ~lbugg~ My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/17/2005 Smoke-Free Days: 674 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 37,791 Amount Saved: $4718 Life Gained: Days: 65 Hrs: 15 Mins: 55 Seconds: 20
