Help with husband

for 18 år siden 0 301 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
HI Princess, AS an ex-smoker yourself you should know that he has to make the decision himself and when he does, then you support him. No use pushing. he will make up his mind and commit when he is ready otherwise it is not going to work. Until then be gentle and subtle. Congratulatrions on your success, and I do hope that your husband reaches the right time and place soon. Cheers KiwiKeith My Milage: My Quit Date: 9/29/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 61 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,548 Amount Saved: $707.6 Life Gained: Days: 9 Hrs: 4 Mins: 45 Seconds: 14

Hi, PC. Seems to me that the only thing you can do is to keep planting the seeds of discontent with smoking. If he really does want to quit, and I believe most smokers do on some level, then these seeds will eventually germinate. This is not the same as nagging, it's more like guiding. Leave "things" lying around for him to find. If he really wants to quit, he'll look, and every look will plant a seed. Congratulations on almost 2 years of freedom, Princess. Totally cool. ;) Shevie My Milage: My Quit Date: 5/23/2005 Smoke-Free Days: 557 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 11,147 Amount Saved: $2116.6 Life Gained: Days: 103 Hrs: 21 Mins: 39 Seconds: 54

Hi all, I came to this website almost 2 years ago when I decided to quit smoking and I returned everyday for the strength I received just from reading everyone's posts and knowing that I was not alone. I am happy to say that I am still smoke free and no longer have cravings but that is not why I'm here. I'm here to ask for your advice on how I can help my husband quit. He tried a year ago last summer and quit for 5 months but he struggled the whole time and finally gave up and started again. I really want him to quit but I don't know what to say anymore. He says he wants to quit but he's using the stress excuse,..."I'm under too much stress." Well we are all when we quit! Anyway, I want to be supportive but I also don't want to hassle him because I know from experience that hassling someone about quitting smoking doesn't make them quit,..it just pisses them off, I know it did me. Any suggestions/advice will be appreciated. Thanks to everyone for all your input! As an ex-smoker myself (god I love saying that)I've told him over and over again that "he will quit when HE wants to quit" and I know this to be true because I'm living proof (as you all are.) I quit several times but until I really wanted to quit for me it never lasted. Like any addiction smoking is a choice, we choose to smoke and we choose to not smoke, no one can make these choices for us. So I know it has to be his choice but it is so very hard to watch him smoke remembering what it was like and how very crappy I felt and now that I feel so good I'm sorry I took so long to quit! Anyway I will try some of your suggestions like Alan Carr's book and some literature on some of the various drugs available. So I will keep my fingers crossed and hope for the best, and I will continue not to nag him. Thanks again. Hi there PC, lovely to see you again. Like you I've not been around here lately. I'm not sure there is much you can do, my OH still smokes one cigar a day (one of those "annoying" social smokers! Although I'm glad now that I'm not one - otherwise I might never have had the incentive to quit) He sometimes suggests that I'm one of "those" ex-smokers, although my other still smoking friends don't seem to think so - an element of guilt creeping in there? I think all you can do is watch and wait and be there when the time comes. The only other thing you could do is drop some literature about Zyban down (or a mag article) somewhere where it might be seen (or is there anything even better out now?) - I quit with Zyban almost in spite of myself! You can't nag a person into quitting...you can't even REASON a person into quitting. Nicotine addiction is very very powerful....as you know it takes commitment and determination to beat it. You hubby has already proven that he can stop smoking...but then at some point he decided he wanted to smoke worse than he wanted to quit. Some people quit, mad and uncommited....they can't maintain. continue to be supportive of him and help him see that he needs true commitment and determination to beat this thing. he is using the typical "reasoning" to keep smoking. we have all been there and done that. Until he decides on his own, you can do nothing.....except....be a fine example of a person who has won at the quitting game. be positive about your own quit...that will help him as much as anything Katy My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/4/2002 Smoke-Free Days: 1790 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 71,637 Amount Saved: $10203 Life Gained: Days: 233 Hrs: 14 Mins: 27 Seconds: 21

princess, How about giving him the link to the site and having him take a look around? Why not ask how you can help him and see what he answers? Offer coping mechanisms, or just step back. Remember, every one will quit in their own time and he may need to figure things out for awhile. You are a book of knowledge and he will tap into that knowledge in time :) Keep Strong, Josie _____________________ The SSC Support Team.
