No Fear.. for anyone who has feared quitting

Fellow Quitters, Franklin D. Roosevelt, in his first first inaugural address, said "So, first of all, let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is fear itselfnameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance." That statement, made in 1933, is as true today as it was back then, when it referred to The Great Depression. "Nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror" Yep, that is how a lot of quitters feel when they even think of giving up cigarettes. Why? Addiction. Paralyzing, all consuming addiction. An addiction that has stolen our self-confidence and determination right from us. We give up our ability to make sound and proper decisions for ourselves in the name of the almighty "fix" of nicotine. We tremble at the thought that our lives will end if we stop feeding the Mr. Nicotine craving. Tisk, tisk, tisk. What a bunch of crap. Yet, not a week goes by that someone here doesn't post about fear in some form or fashion. Why is there fear? Lack of knowledge of the quitting process. Lack of understanding about how cigarettes work. A dread of the unknown. Lack of confidence. You name it, people have it. I'm convinced that smokers are amoung the weakest people around. They need a crutch. Never smokers have faced life head on and can deal with any situation that comes up. Smokers must retreat and cling to their little "helpers" for confidence and guidence. Tisk, tisk, tisk. Be afraid and die a coward. Be strong and stand up to that which seeks to control you and live proudly. Be Strong. Be Smart. More classic Golferman! Good to see you. :) There is a lot of fear attached to quitting before we begin: fear of the unknown, fear of failure, fear of ridicule, and I do believe sometimes a fear of success. If one is successful, what happen's to one's lifestyle? All our friends are smokers. Our routine encompasses smoking. We have all our excuses for smoking formulated. It provides many valuable services for us, including a gateway to new friendships. Of course, as successful quitters, we all know that these are only excuses, not true reasons to keep smoking. Smokers who want to quit need to educate themselves. First learn what smoking is really doing to you, the physical damage and the type of death that likely awaits you shortly down the road. Next, learn the truths about quitting. And do not ask smokers or those who have never smoked. The former will say it can't be done or ask why bother and give a host of fatalistic excuses to continue smoking. The latter can only spout what they've heard or read, if anything. The people to ask about quitting are those who are successfully quit. They know the truths, the hardships, and the glories. Finally, plan your own quit. Go through the Online Quit Program of this site. There's a lot of great info there. When you are ready, then quit. Simple, no muss, no fanfare. Just never, ever, touch another cig. Keep up the great quits, everyone. :) Shevie My Milage: My Quit Date: 5/23/2005 Smoke-Free Days: 546 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 10,920 Amount Saved: $2074.8 Life Gained: Days: 101 Hrs: 18 Mins: 58 Seconds: 30

Another good post, Joe! However, I know lots of "never-smokers" who don't have their heads screwed on straight and don't deal with situations. And even when I was a smoker, I don't think I ever retreated from a situation...I agree with Windy...it takes a hell of a lot of strength to kick an addiction. Quitting is not for wimps!
