2tone, Actually, I've read several statistics that say that if you use some sort of support group, you have almost a 50% chance of succeeding. As for overall, I've heard 1 in 10, 1 in 5 and now you say 1 in 3. I don't think anybody knows exactly what the statistic is on that! Personally, I think anybody who tries to come up with a statistic is going to come up with a radically different statistic than everybody else. But here's one statistic that is NEVER wrong. OK, you ready? No really, I'm not joking you. This is real and is 100% guaranteed! Ready? You have a 100% chance of succeeding, yes I said [b]100% chance[/b] if you don't smoke that next cigarette! :) The ones before it don't count and the ones after it don't count. Only that next cigarette counts! And if you don't smoke it, then you have a 100% guaranteed chance of succeeding at this quit. Are you up for the challenge? I know I am! That's what this site is all about - getting help when you need it and passing it on to others who come after you. And the beauty is that you don't JUST have to pay it forward. If you stick around this site long enough, you will inevitably find many times when you will pay it back to those who have helped you, and also sideways to those traveling this journey right along with you. And I'm sure you will find that helping others is also helping yourself. There's a tremendous power in helping others that somehow encourages the "helper" as well. Whoa!!! There are WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY more than a handful of us with more than 3 months on our meters!!! I can GUARANTEE you that! One thing is that many of us don't post that often anymore because we are comfortable in our quits and don't feel the need to come here everyday, but rather do it when we can out of a sense of duty; since we were helped, we feel that we have an obligation to pass it on, but are comfortable, so we don't do it everyday. Second, this is a very common low point in time at the SSC. The same thing happened last year around this time and in to February. It just has to do with some people giving it a shot for a New Year's Resolution, but then not really being ready, so they go back to smoking until they really are. But believe me, there are WAY more of us who have kept our quits and are comfortable than there are those who are slipping. Just keep in mind that each and every quit is unique and just because many may be slipping and having a rough time doesn't mean that everybody does. There's a post I wrote a LONG time ago about this cyclical pattern that I will see if I can find and bump for you. It's in the General forum. But the point is that this happens quite frequently, but it doesn't mean that you have to fall prey to it. Just keep on doing an excellent job. I know it can seem very disheartening when you see others having a difficult time, but just help them as best you can while, most importantly, keeping your own quit secure. There's always somebody here who's been through it and who's NOT slipping who can help. Crave the Quit! Hi 2tone Folks have just to keep at it. Longer term people also post because they enjoy seeing the successes of other quitters. There is that bonding of quitters. Not to worry about slips as you noted they can occurs. Its all part of the quit process. What we all want is for people to keep trying and keep coming back for suppport. A lot of valid points brought up throughout this thread! Let's remember that everyone has there own unique way of tackling cravings and what works for someone won't work for someone else. This is why this board was created, so that we can all learn from one another. Some will be successful on the first try, others need a little more practice. Well, me too, Luna... My friend, Jessie, was diagnosed with lung cancer... Before long I had a cold/flu thing, felt too bad to smoke. Decided to quit - figured it was a good time to just put 'em down. Found the SSC, cried and vented, threw out a pack of ciggies thanks to Lady, discovered old posts and the rest is history. No slips, I just quit cold turkey and have not looked back either... I kinda like the half-full glass, myself ... There are many quitters who just ...well - quit. 2tone and BS I'm glad you had this converation. I was begining to get a little disillusioned because of all the slips. This conversation setttled a lot. I am an ex-smoker and will be from now on.
