I just read your post. I wish I could tell you how to avoid relapses. What I can tell you I have had several. Each time I relapsed I learned a whole lot more about this addicition, that's right addiction. Boy I can tell I sure did hate that word!!! Me an addict, no way. Yes I am an addict. I am addicted to cigarettes. Each time I picked up that cigarette and smoked it I felt like a complete failure. I knew exactly what I was doing and did it anyway. If you are wishing for an easy way, sorry there has to be some effort put into it. This site has kept me focused. They have helprd me pick myself up and kept me focused on my quit. There are many aids out there to help you. I have tried the NRTs, herbal remedies, Zyban and reading Allen Carrs book. Right now after many attempts to quit I am doing this quit cold turkey after reading Mr. Carrs book. Whatever method you use, the bottom line is "do you want to quit?" It is pretty clear to me others have had an easier time than others. Your quit is yours, do not judge yours with others. Believe me it will only get you off track. Own your quit, ask for help, read, post and be proud. I think I smoked as an escape. Of course we get addicted and all that, but I think it was an escape from dealing with things. Everyone will have different things they want to escape from. After you quit, you learn to deal with things on your own. You can get over the addiction and the habit of smoking. Just know it will take some time. Don't expect it to happen right away. I think that is where we mess up expecting it to happen in a month or two. To us smokers and month or two without a cigarette seems a lot longer then it really is. If you really want this you can do it. Stay strong! You control if you smoke or not. The cigarette does not control what you do. wishing......you find your way back to smoking mainly because you are an "addict". Nicotine addiction is know to be one of the strongest addictions going. It's also sly and the desire to smoke creeps in at times when we are weak and suseptable. Often during crisis, loneliness, depression. In order to stay on top, you must learn the pitfalls, make plans to avoid the times of temptation. This addiction DOES make us think that we "love" smoking...that is't a "friend" and a "comforter". This thinking is straight from the junky that dwells in us. That junky doesn't just get up and leave when we quit smoking....he is still there, lying low, waiting for the right time to assert himself. and if you arrive at a place where you let him take over your thinking, he will have you lighting up at the same time that you are hating what you are doing. So it boils down to this....we are nicotine addicts. That fact never ceases to be. You can get on top of this addiction and stay clean, but it is STILL there.
