My Smoking Buddy is Dying

I am so sorry to hear about your friend. And, I'm sorry that his plight is being exploited to perpetuate the deadly behavior of others. The best action that we can engage in to make the biggest difference is to model. Carry on. Others, as a flicker sparks an awareness to quit, as they begin to suspect that there is a better way - will catch a silent glimpse of you. One by one, slowly they will follow, as do we. There will be strength in numbers, but it originates with the strength of one. :( My Milage: My Quit Date: 12/29/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 38 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 389 Amount Saved: $190 Life Gained: Days: 3 Hrs: 16 Mins: 39 Seconds: 39

Wow, unresponsive so soon. I'm so sorry, but it could be the best thing that could happen. Poor guy. Hope you're hanging in okay... tough times. Lived in Richmond for a while... PM Headquarters --- pro-smoking culture was amazing. Richmond is becoming smoke free very, very, very slowly. peteg My Milage: My Quit Date: 10/30/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 100 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 5,025 Amount Saved: $550 Life Gained: Days: 18 Hrs: 8 Mins: 33 Seconds: 12

    Cigarettes Not Smoked

Audrey, I'm so sorry to hear about your friend. He sounds like a wonderful man. You take care of yourself during this difficult time. Smokers are only fooling themselves. It isn't just lung cancer that's caused from smoking. Who are they kidding. My mother died of colon cancer, and she was a 2 pack a day smoker for most of her life. No, it just sounds like the smokers are trying to "lull" themselves into an invisible safety net. When it comes to smoking there is no such thing. They need one word of advice - QUIT!!! While they still can. Thinking of you Audrey, Jan My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/13/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 23 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 716 Amount Saved: $207 Life Gained: Days: 2 Hrs: 16 Mins: 30 Seconds: 31

Audrey, my thoughts are with you and I will think of your friend. Another tragic loss of life. We really have all been fools - haven't we? it is such a scandal that smoking is still a legal option for good people. Anyway, for the smokers doing the "see? it wasn't lung cancer" I often wonder just how many cancer deaths DO happen as a result of smoking indirectly, only they haven't proved a connection yet? My mum died of breast cancer. Never smoked in her entire life. But her father smoked around her all of her life at home. And she left home only when she married my dad. Who also smoked around her for the rest of her life. I do just wonder sometimes.....! In any case, it's a proven fact, that even if you give up smoking when you already HAVE cancer, your still giving your body a better chance than if you didn't. Take care of yourself - and in the days to come. I have lost two friends from brain cancer. Neither were smokers, ever. I know that I'm going to die someday. Cancer is not enough to scare me smokeless. COPD is, emphysemia is because I already cannot breathe. Oddly, now that cigarettes have taken a toll on my lungs and entire breathing apparatus, I cannot even tolerate second hand smoke. Stale smoke is okay, it won't cause me to have my throat close, but fresh, I can't stand it. Hi Audrey, I'm very sorry about your buddy. I once read that this idea of 'something bad could happen' is often 'too vague' for some 'want-to-be-quitters.' For example: If I could see into the future and went up to everyone who was going to die in an automobile accident and said 'you have to stop driving, it will kill you', they are not going to take any notice. It elicits that 'it won't happen to me' response. Sort of like seeing a smoker succumb to another illness elicits the 'See there! Smoking is not what hurt him' notion. It's important at times like these to focus on the 'real reasons to stay quit' that you can actually see and feel. -Cigarette smoke makes me, my car, and my home smell bad. -It costs me thousands of dollars (euros or pounds) a year. -It upsets people around me. Especially my children (family/friends) -It makes me cough and feel unhealthy. -I feel tired all the time. -My circulation is poor, my feet are cold. -My breath smells. -My teeth are constantly getting stained. You can probably think of better and more relevant reasons of your own. Once you've got the reasons you need to keep turning them over in your mind. This feeds them into your unconscious mind and begins the process of wanting to do something about it. Perhaps smoking didn't cause the tumor, but we know smoking did nothing (not ONE GOOD thing) to help either. Stay stong, stay quit and keep your friends memory alive.
