Knowledge is power, so read all you can about this horrible addiction. The more you read the more the fear will go away and you will gain the strength within yourself to know that this can be done and that you can do it. Your hubby probably will not understand fully what a big deal this is, but we here at the SSC will. We'll be here to lend support each step of the way. Work the Quit Program Tools to the left of your screen. It will really help. Mylife, Congratulations on deciding to quit and welcome to the SSC! Start reading through the forums, this may help you start to see you're not alone. Also be sure to work the program tools on the left side of your screen. You'll need a few replacements for cigarettes (gum, ice water, candy, a straw), a list of distractions and a reward system. You've already got a cheering section! So call on us whenever you feel the need. Danielle ______________________ The SSC Support Team

Welcome to the SSC mylife! Congratulations on your decision to quit. It is one you won't regret. Tips for getting through those first days. They are awful but believe it or not, they will not kill you. It just feels like it. Take a lot of really deep breaths, drink a lot of water and keep yourself busy. Distraction is the key a lot of times. Find something to occupy your mind. Walking and exercise help as well. Hang on to each hour you are quit and build on to it. One step at a time is how you get there. You will not feel like this forever. Actually it is a short time in comparison to how many years we smoked. You are right when you say you are a slave to the cigarette. I didn't even realize that until I quit. You can do this! It's been proven time and time again by all these people on the board. Be sure to check out the program tools to the left and learn all you can about this horrible addiction. There is a ton of useful information on this site and a bunch of really great people to help you along the way. Congratulations again on your decision to take back your Life! HI Mylife, Welcome to SSC, you have found the greatest stop smoking aid in existence. It is hard for a spouse who has never smoked to appreciate what you go through during a quit. believe me, we understand, we have all been through it and we understand. It doesnt matter how trivial or how insane your thought patterns may be, come here...we understand. Good luck, and keep in touch. Hello Mylife, Smart move on your part. Quitting can be done. I smoked 2 packs a day for just under 30 years. I have not even touched a cigarette in almost 9 months now. Your name says it all, this is about your life. It's a fight for your life - DO IT. You can make it happen. Keep reading and keep posting. Make a promise to the board that you wont smoke. When the urge hits - POST - wait for us to reply. GOOD LUCK! Great advice just above me here. I just wanted you to know that it is doable. I smoked for 46 years and was at about 3 packs a day when I finally joined a cessation class. After 3 weeks there we went on the patch and I have never looked back. Again it is doable. And with the COPD, you simply must stop. We are in your corner.
