Question for those who've read the "book"

for 18 år siden 0 53 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
I read the book as part of my preparation to stop smoking. While I didn't stop smoking immediately after I finished the book, I did walk away with some great information which made it a bit easier to put the ciggies down once and for all. While reading the book, my smoking skyrocketed the few weeks prior to my quit day and I contribute that to conflicting desires to continue or to stop smoking. But I'd finally reached the point where I wanted to stop smoking more than I wanted to continue smoking...and so, here I am! :) How much you want to smoke or how much you want to cut down until your quit date is entirely up to you. I imagine that the most important thing to consider is are you prepared to stop? I think you're doing wonderfully!!!....reading and researching and joining up on this site - you're doing as much as you can to be successful!! So, relax and do what feels right to you....you don't have to follow every thing you read in the book. Best of luck to you!! :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 12/23/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 21 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 873 Amount Saved: $102.27 Life Gained: Days: 2 Hrs: 4 Mins: 29 Seconds: 10

Like Mr. Carr says in his book, cutting down is just prolonging the agony. Why would someone want to drag any withdrawal out? They don't tell alcoholics to cut down. My advise is to finish the book and put the smokes down. What are you hanging on to? Don't get me wrong, either. You're going to go through the mental and physical withdrawl but you'll be over it in a few days. The way you're going now, you're just torturing yourself unnecessarily. Good luck to you. I hope you do well no matter what you decide... -- 2tone My Milage: My Quit Date: 12/26/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 19 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 540 Amount Saved: $104.5 Life Gained: Days: 3 Hrs: 4 Mins: 12 Seconds: 21

Hi Lady: I will tell you that for me, that book provided the tools for my quit in terms of my thinking, my mindset. It was like a light bulb dawned as I read the book. It taught me about my addiction to nicotine and how to beat it. I had never thought about my 35-year "habit" in those terms before. Read it and listen to the messages in it -- they're very, very powerful in making this a successful quit for you. Highlight passages that resonate with you and reread them over and over. When he tells you to quit, do it, and do it knowing how and why you can make it happen. I was already about 7 days quit when I read the book. I did not smoke while reading. The book still helped me. Totally changed the way I look at smoking. Hi Lady One more thing...You can check with your Doctor but I don't think that you are allowed to use NRT's while you are still smoking. I used the patch and the biggest step was going from a pack a day to the 21 mg patch. (If you have cut back on your smoking, it may lessen your physical withdrawal when you do use NRT's) Like the book, they are just a tool that helps to reduce the pain of quitting. Unfortunately, no matter how many tools we have the process is rarely painless. You are doing a great job of preparing! I'm looking forward to your quit! Hi Lady - I would stay with your initial plan and cut back as you have been. The reason that he tells people to light up is because he doesn't want people to avoid reading the book because they can't smoke. Most people find that their desire to smoke decreases as they read more. I was on the patch when I read the book. Alan Carr does not recomment NRT's but I stayed on the patch anyway. The patch helped me ease out of my physical addiction and the book helped me to change my thinking. Good luck to you. The book also discourages NRT and advocates cold turkey. I read the book and incorporated it into my own quit, which at the time was with patches. Take a kind of eclectic approach to this. The goal is to quit smoking. How you do it isn't as important as YOU DID IT! Ladycigevictor, You are making wonderful progress starting to practice this new habit of not smoking. The book will only take you so far. You'll have to learn how to cope with cravings on your own and cutting down is a great way to do that especially if you're trying out coping skills like gum, ice water... to see what works best for you. I have read it twice. The first time was good for the first few days and the I went back to smoking. Was not ready. Read it again a little over a month ago. It is working. I was ready. The key is you must be ready. The the meds, books, or whatever will not stop you from smoking until you are ready and willing to commit. I would recommend his method. It was much easier for me and I can only speak for me. Whatever works by all means do it.
