Goes something like this.. Imagine yourself... Sitting in a room full of screaming kids, television & radio blarring , lights being flicked on & off & someone trying to ask you a personal question but you can't hear them over the friggin noise..... you're starting to get a headache - oh boy ! & then..... You're lazing on a deck chair on a hot sandy beach, peace & quite, warm sun on your face, a gentle breeze, sipping on a cold one. bliss. Lookingglass - great question! My life has never been better... I have never felt so good, so healthy and have never *been so healthy! I walk with a spring in my step, my hair smells soooooooo good - fresh and clean... I am not married to an addiction - I am free!! I have never been more awake! I am so aware of ME, of my spirit, my needs and wants, my body speaks to me in ways I can hear now...(no more smokescreen to hide or colour clarity!) Sooo -I am more aware of the world and of others... I can see with amazing clarity, and the world is such a positive place to be!! When I was so busy feeding my addiction I could not have told you anything about what my body was feeling on a daily basis, much less what the stranger on the street corner was doing, when she may have been smiling at me... On days when I think of smoking, which is so rare, I may say to myself, if I smoked, I'd have a cigarette right now, BUT I am not a smoker - and I smile to myself and move on... THAT simple it is! I know that I will never go back to smoking - I have resolve and peace in this very sober world I live in now. w/out the smoke surrounding me and my world. I can now really FEEL the feelings I was not aware of when I was with the addiction of nicotine. And I love the sadness, the laughter, the bright lights, the contentment inside, deep inside, that I feel now that I am fully awake and aware!!! I am loving this life and every day really is a brand new day of being so awake, so alive and so aware!!! Leaving behind the smoke screen is an Awakening -and for me, it is now a way of life that I love and am so grateful for!!! Love and blessings- Healer My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/5/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 403 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 14,139 Amount Saved: $1873.95 Life Gained: Days: 52 Hrs: 19 Mins: 53 Seconds: 45

Thanks, Mr. Ed, Martha and Free! That's all good stuff! And it's part of what we need to hear. We know what we're experiencing, but sometimes it's difficult to paint a picture in our minds of where we're going. And having that vision for the future can be very encouraging. It can strengthen us when it seems like there's nothing but the challenges of this moment. So, thanks again... and I hope that more long-timers will share their experience with us. That would mean a lot. LG, I've thought about this for a while and no great pearls of wisdom are coming to mind. It all really boils down to the fact that I now have more to give. Also, the quality of what I have to give is so much better than anything I could have done as a smoker. I realize that is vague. When I smoked, so much of my focus was on me and feeding my addiction. Even when I was with my family or friends I wasn't completely there. Or I'd have to physically leave - put everything on hold so that I could smoke. It was incredibly selfish. Also because of the emotional toll that smoking took on my life I didn't know how to deal with things in an emotionally rational way...I just smoked and it "went away". Until I quit. I never knew how much of my thinking was tied up by smoking and things smoking related. So now, I have all kinds of time and energy to give to others who need the REAL me. At my job, in my home, all my interactions are more authentic now because I'm more fully available. The sad thing I realized was that the people in my life had always needed the REAL me but I had been unwilling to offer myself because my addiction came first. When I quit, I wanted the freedom of living without the smell, the health effects, the financial drain, the constant feeling of need and the stigma of smoking. All of the emotional things were "gravy" for me. The irony is that those are the most lasting and enriching rewards I ever could have hoped for. It's good on this side of the fence, it took some time to get here but every step was worth it. What are you hoping that your future will look like as a non-smoker? LookingGlass, Good post! As a 400 day non-smoker, I do not crave anymore. The worst part of my quit has been my bad moods. What I would say to any new Quitter is: be prepared for a bumpy ride and this will certainly not be the best time of your life. But it is a sacrifice worth doing! It is without question the best decision that I ever made Mr Ed :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 2/13/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 423 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 12,709 Amount Saved: 3172.5 Life Gained: Days: 69 Hrs: 0 Mins: 57 Seconds: 45

"What life can be like". As fledgling non-smokers, that's what we want to know. And if you have more than a year in as a non-smoker, I would like to invite you to tell us your story. What is life like for you today, as a non-smoker? What has changed, and how did it change? Today, I need for you to help me form a vision of what life can be like. Will you do that?
