Social drinking and not smoking

for 18 år siden 0 12 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Hi guys! Thanks to everyone for their excellent advise. So....I did end up going out with our friends, I had a few drinks and didn't smoke the entire night! I'm not saying that it was not hard, but my friends and husband really supported me. I knew the cravings would go away after 10 or 15 minutes, so I waited them out. I reminded myself that I still wake up every morning and want my coffee and cigarette, and I've defeated the urges every morning thus far. So, last night I tried to think of alcohol the same as my daily dose of coffee. I don't need to smoke with either, and it worked! Missions Accomplished!!!!!

I found that I went to my haunts and just didn't drink - Had lots of water with lemon. The biggest issue is being in environments where you regulary had a cigarette. It took about 90 days for me to feel comfortable at all of the old haunt. toxin, None of us want to rain on your parade. You are doing just great....but my vote is "NO" Quit a few years ago my son quit for a year!!!! Yep..a year. One night he went out with friends and had ONE. Just one. That was it. One got him back to a full fledge smoker and he has not attempted to quit since. (very sad) I think it is too soon. I hardly ever drink...and I had a couple of glasses of wine on my vacation a couple of weeks ago. my best friend smokes... the rest of the girls don't. Even though I was in the majority (non smokers)...it WAS HARD. That was at 80something days quit. Again... you are doing so great. Let us know how you made out. Toxinfree1, You've received some great advice from your fellow quitters. As mentionned, some quitters find it helpful to abstain or moderate their alcohol consumption on their first outing. Your best defense is undoubtedly to have a plan in place before you go out. Some members have included bringing coping strategies with them, having a reward in place ahead of time for when you return home smoke free and if all else fails having an excuse to go home early should smoking become too tempting is another way to keep your quit safe. Keep us posted. Danielle ____________________ The SSC Support Team

ditto to Nonic. If you comb through past posts, you will find many, many people who lost their quit because "they just had to have a drink." What do you treasure most? Your quit? Or your drink? I agree that it would be wiser not to drink. toxinfree I can only tell you what I have done about this situation and if it rings true to you then thats a good thing. I did not return to my regular haunts until I was around two months quit. By that time knew that I was strong enough to either not smoke or leave. Most of my friends are shall we say alternative types and they usually have no problem drinking and smokin and doing what comes natural (to them anyway)...So after I quit, that life was a bit alien to me...I was no longer on the existensial joy ride that most of my friends enjoy... It actually went quite well...I did not drink (there is an affinity between nicotine and alchohol)...And I was actually quite bored with the people who used to entertain me...In the end I have not been back since and I think I am going along a different road now...Perhaps your friends are not of the bohemian persuasion and you will find their company compelling and agreeable. In that case I would certainly go, but if I where you I would abstain from alchohol simply because there is a known relationship between the two... nonic My Milage: My Quit Date: 12/25/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 123 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 2,971 Amount Saved: $861 Life Gained: Days: 22 Hrs: 23 Mins: 58 Seconds: 23

Toxinfree, you have to be acutely aware of this; alcohol is a mind-altering drug that lowers inhibitions. It effects judgment and reason. The more you drink, the more those faculties are effected. If you drink to a great enough extent to impair your judgement... you may end up smoking. My advise is... if you must drink... don't drink enough to effect your judgement. If you've drunk enough that you couldn't drive, then your judgement is probably impaired enough that your quit is at risk too. Hi Toxinfree! Good job on your quit! I found that if you drink something different than your usual drink, (ie: if you always drink vodka, try something else) I found that when I drink something that I didn't drink when I smoked, it doesn't produce the cravings as much. Also, its a good idea to of course keep the drinks to the minimium, as too much leads to "whoopses and weaknesses". Hope this helps! ;) My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/5/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 53 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,343 Amount Saved: $559.15 Life Gained: Days: 6 Hrs: 11 Mins: 43 Seconds: 52
