I used to smoke...

for 17 år siden 0 3541 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Thank you guys. I had no idea when I started this, how emotional it would get & how much I would learn about myself. No wonder I could never stay quit before, I never went beyond just trying not to smoke. I too applaud your courage Unhooked!!! A large part of beating this addiction is facing all of the emotions that we burried when we smoked. You've done that today! Be proud of yourself! Crave the Quit! That's the way Unhooked! You can't hear this in the background, but it's applause in recognition of your courage. OK. Here it is. To me, that's a very powerful sentence. It means that I have choices now that I did not have when I started smoking as a motherless child of 13 growing up in abject poverty & desperately wanting to belong somewhere. It means I can let go not only of my addiction but of all the sadness and disappointment that led me to it. It means I can show my children that we are in control of our own lives, we do not have to be powerless over our own emotions and we do not have to allow things to "happen" to us, we can make things happen "for" ourselves. To quote Miss Winfrey, "when you know better, you do better." "I don't smoke anymore" means I know better now & I have an obligation to myself & those who love me to do better. Thanks, BFS, for starting this thread. You can't know the impact it had on me. I am literally shaking as I type this and I feel as if I let go of a great burden. Mercy, I agree that "I used to smoke" is such a personal sentence that it evokes very powerful emotions in some. For some people, it may make them angry when they think of it because they still feel guilty for their past mistakes. Others may be ecstatic because it means that they are free from the addiction that held them hostage for so long. Others may still be grieving the loss of the cigarette, their friend, and that sentence may cause sadness. Still others may just see it as a fact, and accept it without it triggering too much emotion. For me, that sentence evokes pride... pride in the fact that I have done something that I never thought I could... something that SO many people I know would like to do, but yet haven't. The replies have been great! Keep them coming! I'm loving them! Crave the Quit! I guess some of our reasons can be so personal that no one would understand but the person themselves. But...though you may not understand mine...here it goes "I use to smoke means that the Spirit which dwells within me became louder than the desires of my flesh. I then chose to listen." I WAS also a closet smoker. Freedom from that is worth everything. I feel like I can go places now without having to change clothes and worrying about someone smelling the smoke. I used to put a jacket on in the summertime when I smoked so it wouldn't get on my clothes. Putting a coat or jacket on in Texas during the summer is not a fun thing to do.( way to hot, whew ) I can do anything now!!!! ;p My Milage: My Quit Date: 5/28/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 0 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 0 Amount Saved: $0.00 Life Gained: Days: 0 Hrs: 1 Mins: 31 Seconds: 7

Great thread BFS. It means that I no longer have to work so hard to hide my addiction from others (I was a closet smoker). It means FREEDOM. It means I spend more time with my family and friends since I'm not trying to sneak away to feed my addiction.
