Feel like I'm losing my best friend !

I know what you mean, I felt panic when I would think of quitting smoking. I thought they were my little friends too...there for every victory, every defeat, every time I needed one. But in your mind you know they aren't your friends, they are very unhealthy, cost a fortune and most people don't like them any more. It is getting harder and harder to hang around that particular friend. In your head, you know they aren't friends at all. They are more like the friend who talked behind your back, borrowed your dress and went out with your boyfriend. After the (fill in the blank) borrowed your car. Every time I want a cigarette, I try to remember that smoking isn't the solution. Smoking is the problem. Had I never smoked, I wouldn't be craving. So they don't get rid of that feeling, they cause that feeling. Hi Dee, You are not alone in feeling that way and sometimes the fear of quitting is worse than the reality of it. Your 'best friend' is also pretty abusive - it lies to you, steals your money, your time and really smells badly ;) If you can - try to get excited about being free of all the things you don't like about smoking. The ashes in the car, cleaning the ashtrays, the smell in your hair or in your clothes, etc. Can I ask what your reasons are for quitting? Sometimes seeing them in writing helps to keep your mind on the right track. With each of your last few cigarettes try to see them as a non-smoker would, without the emotional attachment. The smells, the chemicals, the way it looks, the smoke in your eyes. You are making a great decision and you can definitely do this. You'll get better, healthier friends once you quit! Yes Dee, that is a very common question. Alot of ex smokers (including me) have gone thru this. It is definitely a part of quitting and it lasts a few days....Except that friend was a mean one who was trying to kill you! We all seem to go thru a 'mourning' period. I am not exactly sure of the 'technical' reasons why, but oh so many have gone thru this, so your are very normal! Have a little funeral for old Nic, maybe that will help! We already know Nicotine is not a friend, but the habit of hiding behind the smokes is what we are actually grieving. Its kind of a realization that now we can't hide behind old Nick anymore, now we have to face those emotions and you know what - they aren't so bad! So hang in there Dee! we have all gone thru this! Vent away if it bugs you, we will be here. :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/5/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 82 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 2,050 Amount Saved: $865.10 Life Gained: Days: 10 Hrs: 2 Mins: 18 Seconds: 9

I've got one more day until my quit :8o: Why does it feel like I'm losing my best friend. Why would the few minutes it takes to smoke a cig mean so much. It's amazing how something can have that effect on you. I've only had 3 today by 4:30 (cutting way down) and I find myself in there counting to see how many are left. I refuse to buy another pack because I don't want any laying around the house come Monday morning. I just started having these feelings today. Guess it's because it is so close to the BIG DAY!!! I know I will be staying real close to this site for a while. You all will be a big help to me and maybe I will be able to return the favor. pm :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 5/28/2007 Smoke-Free Days: -1 Cigarettes Not Smoked: -10 Amount Saved: $-2.00 Life Gained: Days: 0 Hrs: 0 Mins: 0 Seconds: -3137
