Can't Fall To Sleep

Lourdes, This has happenend to me in the past. I would be having a negative dream and I would want to wake up but could not. It is not a nice feeling! Once I am awake it takes me awhile to get my heart rate back to normal and then think to myself "oh wow, thank god that was a dream". I usually get a drink of water wash my face and then go back to bed. Just to let you know you are not alone! Melanie

Last night I fell asleep at 10 and by twelve I woke up sweating and in the middle of a panic attack. While I was sleeping I felt that I wanted to wake up but I couldn't like I was Dead but alive.It was as if i was battling to wake up for hours but couldn't. It was horible because I was terrifed of falling asleep after. Perhaps it was only a dream. Has this ever happend to anyone..... Thanks

Whenever I have a panic attack, regardless of whether it was in the morning or evening, I become terrified of falling asleep (it's the whole fear or dying or something equally awful happening whilst I'm asleep). Sometimes I put the TV on to an interesting show (which any other time guarantees I'll fall asleep!). Other times I'll do some crossword puzzles or read something that doesn't require full attention, like a magazine or book of comic strips (the Far Side books work very well). I do these things in my bed and sure enough, I wake up with my face smooshed into a book, or the remote hanging out of my hand. Another thing I do is play word games or try to do all the state capitals in my head (which embarrassingly enough, I can't do) I think the key is to do something that distracts you, but something that won't "energize" you more than you already are. Oh ya, most of my posts on here are from nights when I can't fall asleep. I can't relax or I'll panic. Pills have to put me to sleep normally, but for the past 2 nights I have been going to sleep on my own. I guess it's all catching up with me. But yes, I definately know what you mean.

Ok. I really need some postive feedback. I've just seemed to relapse into my panic disorder...came off my medication about two months ago. For whatever reason, I can't seem to fall asleep. As I lay down, automatically my heart begins to race and I just can't seem to reach sleep. Anyone out there with similar experiences? PLEASE let me know. Jeff
