That sense of distraction, unable to work, settle to anything. That feeling of loss, of a change of identity. The inability to imagine a scene without cigarettes and the immediate plan for subterfuge to have sneaky ones. These are all the things I felt at the stage you are at now. I was offered a trip to Italy and all I could think about was how it would be as a non smoker - but in a really negative kind of way. Now I'm due to go in August and I can tell you the feeling/knowledge of being a non-smoker is fabulous. It cuts out a whole section of anxiety from the trip - and leaves me more cash to buy nice prezzies! I think the suggestion of binoculars for the roof terrace is a great idea and/or a sketch book. Both these things keep your hands busy. Hope you are feeling more positive today. Mamakitty, So glad you're feeling a little bit more confident about your trip. Rest assured, many have felt just as you do now with regards to their identity. This is probably one of the biggest lies you can tell yourself. Truth be told, you've never really been yourself. You've been a version of your true self mangled with an addiction to nicotine. If you're like many, you've used it to cope as well as to keep your emotions in check. Yes, absolutely, this change will rattle the ground you stand on a bit but most would testify it's been a good change. If you need a few concrete examples, tour our Hall of Fame. Mare-C-bow-coop:) My French is damaged, since last time I tried to ask where the restroom was at Le Bon Marche' (for our marching little daughter, holding her crotch with one hand) the woman behind the counter started dishing up sauteed mushrooms for me. Now, it's just as fun for me to listen, smile, and keep the correct change for the toilets handy:) I love all these ideas. Thanks! I never thought of arguing with myself from a nonsmoker's veiwpoint, or sticking the money away that I save for a pretty Parisian reward! I like that... museums, and walking a lot. Maybe I'll get brave and go explore near the apartment when I get panicky there, and print out these and all my favorite posts to read on the rooftop. Boy, change is hard. I know that nobody likes change except maybe a wet baby; but it seems like that is the most difficult right now. Making these huge changes in my thinking and actions and dreams... Sometimes I feel like I'm losing my "self" and even my ability to work as well as I used to. (That's what always made me go back to it in past attempts. I felt like I needed it to function properly) But now, I think I know better. I just have to be patient, and re-fill myself with all the right stuff. Distraction seems to be where it's at for me lately. Can't believe I'm cleaning out things in the house that have sat where they shouldn't be for years! Feels good... sounds like your nonsmoking you needs to have a talk with your junkie you...possibly in French? Je l'aime les cigarettes? Non! rien! Les cigarettes son bleechhh!!! lol....obviously i need to brush up a bit. But I find it helpful to argue with myself from the nonsmoker's viewpoint. As Danielle said, maybe bring some meaningful posts from here? Plan what else you can do on the rooftop? Not that I'm a peeping tina, but I think it would be fun to have some binoculars or opera glasses, and make up stories. Mamakitty, Give yourself an alternative for that rooftop! A pleasurable activity or distraction to help you from being tempted. You may also benefit from bringing inspirational material from the site or a list of your quit smoking reasons with you for review. Worst case scenario? Leave the rooftop and tackle this trigger again when you feel you're ready. True, nobody would know about your secret smokes but that wouldn't last. Sometimes, one puff is all it takes to slide down that slippery slope. Nope (Not One Puff Ever) is the only way to go! Have fun in Paris! Danielle - Bilingual Support Specialist

Hi mamakitty! Wow, a rooftop in Paris - why would anyone want to ruin it with nasty cigarettes. Just kidding. One good thing is that because you'll be out of your element your triggers might not be too bad. I would plan for lots of the same things you may be using now. Lots of water, fresh fruit to munch on, keeping a journal, taking lots of photos, huggin' on the family. I'm sure there will be a lot of places you'll want to visit and if you are walking around that will help. Go to non-smoking places like museums or the theater. If there will be a lot of other tourists around (long lines, crowds, hot weather) try using that brilliant strategy that Sparky has suggested - H.A.L.T. Don't let yourself get too hungry, angry, lonely or tired. Remind yourself of why you quit and that you can only get there by not smoking. It sounds obvious but sometimes logic goes out the window when a crave hits. Maybe plan to buy yourself a pretty Parisian reward with some of the money you've saved? I would also pack some gum, mints or hard candy and some crosswords or something for the flight. I think you'll find that you are going to enjoy yourself much more as a non-smoker than puffing away in Paris. Have a blast and congrats on nearly a WEEK quit! My family is going to Paris in early July, and we'll have a great apartment with an open rooftop to spend time on... I keep thinking about what a perfect place it would be to have private smokes! I'm really afraid of slipping then...
