Interesting thread! I think there is an "addiction gene", some have it, some don't. Many in my family are/were addicted to alcohol, drugs, cigarettes and any combination thereof. I chose cigarettes for my addiction. There is not one person in 2 generations (20 people)that didn't have an addiction to something. What are the chances of that??? I can't buy coincidence. I think the only choice of those with the "addiction gene" is which addiction? Just a thought. WEll, I think it is all about choice....not genetics. Genetics plays a role "after" the wrong choice. It began with the first choice. The very first choice when someone offered you a cigarette. We made the wrong choice about the wrong substance. On top of that...it was the wrong substance for the wrong body. Yes...there is genetics. You don't have the genetic addiction disease, UNLESS, you feed it an addictive substance. An alcoholic has the genes to become addicted to the alcohol. Call it predisposed. But.... had he not made the wrong "choice".... he would never have become aquired the disease. CHOICE..CHOICE..CHOICE.....it's all about choice It's like that commercial...."Pay me now..or pay me later." For the beginners it's who test the grounds of temptation.... "Say No now.....or say NO later" Well.....it's later for me...and now all I do now is say NO each and every day. My thoughts for a goat that is still reeling from her new medicine. I'm not sure I buy the genetics or addictive perssonality arguements either. I wonder if it really is genetics, or role modelling. Maybe some combination of the 2 but to say I'm an addict because my parents were & I can't help it is too easy. I think I learned to self-medicate by watching my role models do it & while you have a point about not being able to un-learn, if I learned how, I can also learn how not to. If talking to an imaginary junkie that lives in my head is the behaviour that bridges what I have done & what I will do, then that's the way I'll get there. Good Point "addiction as a disease " I'm undecided ? Geneticts ?? A learned behaviour can never be unlearned but a new behaviour can be learned in it's place . I don't know about you but I 'm having a good time discussing this one :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/20/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 132 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 2,376 Amount Saved: $1,320.00 Life Gained: Days: 30 Hrs: 6 Mins: 4 Seconds: 31

Ahh, "addiction as disease". We've had that discussion, Bear, I don't subscribe to that theory. Not for nicotine, alcohol, or any other kind of addiction. I believe addiction is learned behaviour that can be un-learned. Good for you and realy do applaud you. I still have a problem with the image that you and many others have of themselves." I am a junkie " This simply is not true.I am a person that has an addiction much the same as a person that has a cold.Semanticts maybe ??? but as soon as a person has an image of themselves as a junkie then the investigation into this illness ends ?? That could very well be, Bear. I know there are some others here who would agree that there is no demon & no junkie either, that we are somehow not taking responsibility, or putting our addiction at arms' length from ourselves by using those terms. Of course I know that I am the junkie, I'm not delusional, but it just helps me to give it a personality & make it separate from me. I have an easier time feeling positive & not as if I'm denying or depriving myself of something. I really don't think anyone here can honestly say I haven't taken responsibility for my quit or faced up to my addiction. Maybe it doesn't make sense & I know it's just a silly little game I play with my own mind but it works for me & if it ain't broke, I ain't fixin' it. :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 5/13/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 78 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,560 Amount Saved: $858.00 Life Gained: Days: 7 Hrs: 20 Mins: 40 Seconds: 18

I spent the whole weekend looking for the Nicodemon and coulnd'nt find him anywhere. It became much like trying to find Santa Claus and the Good Fairy. So I became of the opinion it was invented ?? so that we did'nt have to take responsability for our own actions or behaviour when it comes to not smoking or maintaining our quit. :quest: My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/20/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 132 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 2,376 Amount Saved: $1,320.00 Life Gained: Days: 30 Hrs: 5 Mins: 51 Seconds: 14
