Well, I did it, I had my heart to heart with him. I also took him to the steak house, I invited his mom, my X, and of course his brother came along. It was a nice dinner, I told him to get whatever he wanted, and he did, I didn't mind the $120 bill at the end, it was worth it. So after dinner we got home, and we sat down and talked, turns out I'm more worried than he is. I guess that would be normal since I'm the parent, I know I gave my parents ulcers when I was young. Today I have to drop him off at the recruiters office, he'll stay the night in a hotel tonight. Then tomorrow morning I can see him for a few hours before he goes to the airport to leave. It's coming fast, faster than I thought it would. Lets see, oldest one leaving the nest, midlife crisis moving in???? LOL Still smoke free, lots of deep breathing, gum, and coming here for inspiration. pokerbrat, I think that is a characteristic of males in most families! Good luck with the heart to heart with your son. Remember, you don't lose him for good and he will always be your son. Thank you everyone for your kind and encouraging words. I broke down driving home yesterday from work, that was a little strange, but the grief just washed over me as I was driving and I had a good cry. To Audrey, no we haven't had that heart to heart, there has been an awkward silence in my home for about 5 days now, my son just buries himself in his laptop, and I bury myself into something else, typical male behavior in my family, if it makes you upset..ignore it.. LOL Anyway, I'm going to take him for a steak dinner tonight, I have to drop him at the recruiters office tomorrow at 2pm, then I'll get to see him Thursday at the MEPS building from 10am to 12pm, then he'll get on the shuttle to the airport and thats it, he'll be gone. So I guess tonight will be my last chance to have that heart to heart with him, I better get it done. Thanks again everyone, I'm still hanging in there, and the junkie is still talking s$#%.. Cigarettes Not Smoked

Pokerbrat,... maybe you won't make it. Maybe you will end up smoking. I hope not, for your sake... and for your son's sake... but if you decide to have that cigarette... it's not the end of the world. I had 120 days in, back almost 4 years ago, right here at SSC... and I went back smoking. Like you, I found myself in a situation that I just wasn't prepared to deal with without smoking. And while that was the bad news, the good news was that the door swings both ways. I was able to come back and try again. And now...well, things are looking pretty positive. No one here wants to see you take that cigarette, because we all know how important it is for you to beat this. And we all want you to feel so strongly about that, to be so committed to it, that you can remain smoke-free...even through this. And I think you can. But, if you take that cig or two or three... just know that you can stop anywhere along the way and jump back in the saddle. I'm not "giving you permission" to smoke. It's not mine to give. Nor do I have the power to stop you from smoking. You have to work out with-in yourself what you're willing to give to this committment. You know why you're doing this. Is it enough? I have a 17 yr old son, a 15 yr old daughter and a 12 yr old daughter... and I'm also a single father. I have a pretty good idea what you're experiencing right now, and if I was in your shoes... I don't know what I'd do. I'd like to think I wouldn't smoke... but I don't know that. I guess the only thing I can tell you is that your son, in all probability, is going to be fine. The odds are heavily on his side. But he needs to go over there with the intention of living, and you can be in solidarity with him... by believing in life for your son... and for you. But, whatever your decision...as long as there's breath there's hope. A wrong choice will just lead to another opportunity to make the right choice. But...if you choose to walk through the fire, if you choose to accept this pain as a condition of living and trust that it will amount to good in time, you'll benefit, along with your son and all those who love you. Whatever you do, whatever you choose... we'll be here. PB My heart goes out to you, I know how I felt when my son left for boot camp, but smoking is not going to change the fact that he is gone and it is not going to make you feel any better if any thing it will make you feel worse. The craving will stop in time, I threw away a nine month quit and now I am starting all over again and believe me when I say it was deafinitly not worth it. Stay strong you can get thru this we are all here to help.
