This is a very interesting thread, indeed.
Doctors are quick to prescribe drugs for anything and everything. It is up to the patient to determine if that is the route they want to go.
Example: high cholesterol can be controlled in many cases by diet and exercise. Do doctors recommend that as a first course of action? Not usually. Since diet and exercise do not happen to be two of my favorite things, will I take a pill? You bet!
Who gets punished? We realize that it is most often the ones who can least afford it.
Who gets rich? The drug companies, of course. It wasnt that many years ago when we wouldnt have known Cialis from Wellbutrin. We took what was prescribed. Now, however, the drug companies have HUGE advertising budgets to get these names out there so we can all go to our doctors and ask for exactly what we want...the designer drugs!
Chantix could be considered one of those designer drugs, and I took it happily. It is expensive!! But it worked. I did 2.5 months of it. I believe you will see more NRT and quit aids come along as smoking becomes outlawed in more places. Where is the competition to drive down the cost of drugs? Current FDA procedures for patents can delay a generic equivalent of a drug for many years! More profit for the drug companies!
Many people have blind faith in their doctors and take anything that is prescribed by whatever doctor prescribes it. My 90 year old neighbor (an RN in her day with every one of her wits about her) was prescribed 3 medications by 3 different doctors, all necessary medications. What the 3 docs didnt know was that each of them prescribed a med that contained some sort of diuretic...she got 3 doses of it daily rather than only 1. She couldnt leave the house because she couldnt get that far from the bathroom!
Being a nicotine addict and believing in the notion that there are addictive personalities, yes, pill popping is easy for me. I dont like being in sick or in pain and Ill take whatever I can to stop it. But thats just me. If you understand your medical issues and have found alternative methods that work for you, thats great! If the medications work for you, thats great too.
Its a personal decision....thats why they make chocolate and vanilla!
Only my 2 cents.
