Emotional Development

Hi Lady, As Josie said, you are on top form today!!! I started smoking aged 16 years and smoked for 40 years. I was an adolescent in her fifties for about 2 years!!!! It was such a huge difference to face all those emotions for the first time without my crutch. Audrey, good luck with your interview! To you and anyone else......I read somewhere before I quit that the whole process of quitting takes 2 years or thereabouts............that was one of the reasons I was so scared to do it! It seemed such a long time. What was not explained clearly enough was the detail of what took so long...... The physical adaption of the body to life after 40 years of poison. The management of anger. The emotional controls that need to be learned. There was so much to learn....the list is so long, but learn we do and life imperceptibly becomes mature, adult and organised, and before you know it, you have grown up in your quit.....you are comfortable with not only your quit but your life. As Lady said, if you can quit smoking you can do anything, so hang on to that fact and go out and do it........you deserve it! NEVER LOOK BACK, THE FUTURE IS AHEAD. Lolly. :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 11/25/2004 Smoke-Free Days: 998 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 34,930 Amount Saved: 4,990.00 Life Gained: Days: 142 Hrs: 16 Mins: 58 Seconds: 20

Audrey! Don't you dare call and cancel. Change is scary but Change is also Exciting!!!!! Let me tell you the courage that has come along with my quit. Recently, I accepted a job 200 miles from where I lived at a level way beyond any level I've ever worked at before. I rented my house, packed my two boys up, left my father and my pregnant daughter behind and started my new life. The new life with out the dark cloud. I have also given in to a relationship that I was very hesitant about. Guess what??? I AM SOOOOOOO HAPPY!!!!!!! I wouldn't change a thing! You quit smoking! You can do anything. There is a new you now... let her florish! The possibilities are endless. Dare to dream and then be even more daring in making that dream a reality. The excitement inside of me isn't containable. I never imagined I could be so comfortable and happy. It takes time, just as all stages of your quit and changes take time. Take one day at a time, stay focused, stay positive and don't let anything stand in your way. Especially not your fear! Quitting is a soul-searching, life changing experience... Enjoy it!!! Lady, I keep opening the door for myself but I am terrified of stepping through it! My quit is very much like yours. I am ready to make the changes (big) that quitting has brought me to. I've got everything lined up, AGAIN. I am soul searching why I want these changes and trying to put everything in perspective. 1)I am "fixing" my career after our company had a change agent come through and screw up my career path. 2)I want to leave the former life where all of my co-workers and my relationship with them was held up by the habit. Now the relationships are depressing and falling apart. 3)This is the scary part...I want to start new relationships in a new environment. See what is out there waiting for me. I can't muster up the strength to allow this to happen. Change is soooooo scary, and it certainly won't happen if I continue to be afraid of it. After all I can simply fall back into my comfort zone, and shut the door once again. Yes it is another job interview. Help me! I might as well call and cancel. Ive heard it said that we stop developing emotionally when we begin to smoke. Meaning that we start using the cigarette to deal with emotional issues rather than developing coping skills naturally. The smoking IS our coping skill. So if we began smoking at age 15; we are sort of at the level of a 15 year old emotionally when we quit. At first, I didnt think much of this but as I progress in my quit Im beginning to believe this has some true meaning. Life experiences teach us so much but how many of our choices are determined by the enslavement of smoking? All of them pretty much right? When Im honest I know they were for me. I spent the first two years of my quit learning about me. Who am I, what am I doing here, where am I going, and why am I the way I am. Now it seems as if I am taking all Ive learned and moving forward with life. Standard progression I would imagine. It amazes me how much learning about myself has taught me about others. My outlook on life is so very different than it use to be. I realize that not everyone has an emotional quit and mine seems to have been extremely emotional. At the same time, our experiences probably arent all that different. Ive learned more about my children and relationships with others. Im learning about love and life and how wonderful it can all be. This is my life beyond the smoke screen and I wouldnt trade it for anything. I wonder if anyone has had the same or similar experiences.
