If you are like most of us, your cigarettes accompanied you everywhere and were a part of everything you did. I would smoke the minute I woke up in the morning, and the last thing at night. I didn't get up from a chair or move to a different room without having my pack with me. I couldn't drive one block down the street without them. So it stands to reason that there is this sense of loss for something that was physically closer to you than anything else in your life.
Make sure that you understand that even though they were your companion, they were not your friend. Don't romanticize them. Instead learn how much they potentially hurt you, made you and your clothes smell bad, made your teeth yellow, and other things that a true friend would not do. Some folks on here wrote a good-bye letter to their cigarettes...that might be useful for you.
Good luck!
Rusty :)
