Yep, aloha, I think you got it. I agree completely that it's a combination of factors, some genetic and some environmental. Lol @ Pen's aunt & uncle! Too funny! I have to agree with Pen, right now mine is poker. 6 years ago it was tournament bass fishing, and years before that it was playing guitar upon stage in front of lots of people at ear splitting volumes. My addictions seem to change over time, I am a jack of all trades and a master of none. After I get bored with poker, who knows what I'll end up doing. But I know it won't be smoking! And as far as what Aloha said, all I got to say is....what? Everyone is addicted to something! Even my aunt and uncle who don't drink, don't smoke, don't gamble, don't swear, don't eat the wrong food, only eat the right food they're addicted to doing everything right and it ain't good for them!!! :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 5/18/2004 Smoke-Free Days: 1211 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 24,220 Amount Saved: 6,055.00 Life Gained: Days: 194 Hrs: 12 Mins: 12 Seconds: 54

Here's my take on it, bear an addict is someone who most likely has a vulnerability to it because of a genetic imbalance in the old brain pathways. Given that genetic heritage, there is most likely some nuttiness in the growing up phases, and a lack of development of more productive coping strategies, so that when the going gets tough, the addiction gets growing. Unhooked would say I am a bit too cerebral at times, but you asked the question, and that is my best educated theory Good morning :) -aloha My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/22/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 173 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 6,920 Amount Saved: $1,176.40 Life Gained: Days: 24 Hrs: 3 Mins: 5 Seconds: 37

I was a little reluctant to start this thread for 2 reasons.1 it may have already been beaten to death.2 with a bad case of the blahs running around it may be a bit of a bummer right now.Either way we can always have the mods remove it. :) We seem to be up to our backsides in addiction these days.If its not nicotine, alcohol, gambling its cocaine, meth or some other fashionable drug. Science would have us believe that we are ill or have some genetic predisposition to addiction. If what they say is even remotly true we live in very troubled times when you consider the number of addicts in their various disiplines. So what is realy going on here.Is there a common ground here that you and I can discover through our own investigation, not arriving at any conclusions,to discover a Profile of An Addict.
