I stand corrected... Anti-smoking advocates highlight the long-term health effects, like cancer and emphysema, that result from a lifetime of smoking or chewing tobacco -- but these maladies are the result of chemicals in cigarettes other than nicotine. Unfortunately, the fact that nicotine alone is an extremely toxic poison often goes unmentioned. Not many people realize that nicotine is also sold commercially in the form of a pesticide! And every year, many children go to the emergency room after eating cigarettes or cigarette butts. Sixty milligrams of nicotine (about the amount in three or four cigarettes if all of the nicotine were absorbed) will kill an adult, but consuming only one cigarette's worth of nicotine is enough to make a toddler severely ill! Wazz, This was a pretty good question...I believe it is an individual choice to choose the method that will leave you addiction free in the end. There is a reason there are so many NRT's available and why there are now other alternative methods, like Chantix, the shot, etc. This is actually my 3rd attempt at quitting, with the exception of when I was pregnant (then I didnt quit for me, so I dont count it). The first time, I used the patch and was quit for 11 monthes. Then I did the gum and quit for 7 monthes. This time I have gone cold turkey and feel more committed than either time before. The reason for that was because the first two times, by the time I was ready to give up the NRT's, it was harder for me to go through the withdrawels when I had already experienced the benefits of not quitting. (I was breathing better, my skin was clear, no more headaches, etc) Chantix was not an option for me because I have Lupus and it would have interferred with my nerves and the other meds I take. So I decided I could get through it cold turkey if I relied on Christ to take the cravings away and channeled my smoking energy into a different place. But every person is different and every quit is different. I am proud of ANYONE that makes a proactive effort to make their life better and healthier, no matter the path that he/she takes to get there. yes Alohakeia, there are plenty of chemicals in those too. The other thing most people don't realize is that these chemicals not only affect the tissue that is directly exposed to them like your lungs and tongue, stomach... but there is enough evidence these days supporting a role for smoking as a major cause of endometrium and breast cancer. Anyhoo... after all of that and I still went back to smoking... addiction is a nasty thing. Wazz, Thanks for the thought-provoking questions. And, yes, it does take some effort to beat this addiction. But doesn't just about anything worthwhile take some effort? As for the letting your guard down relapse..I've seen it happen many times. People think they have it beat, so they think they can just have one. But the truth is, we are addicts, and one leads to a hundred, leads to a thousand more. I always remind myself of that when that sneaky thought enters my brain. I don't want to go through craving cigarettes ever again in my life. And if I smoke one I will be craving another one within a few minutes, and on and on..... sprquits, That is interesting news. I'll believe you since you are the researcher, but a question occurred to me. What is it that causes the mouth cancer in those who dip? Are there chemical addittives in that too? Wazz, it does get easier, so much easier. You will get to where you never want to smoke and rarelt, if ever, even think about it. Yes, we are addicts & we have to always have our NOPE guard up, but as we beat our triggers and adjsut to our smoke-free lives, we begin to see ourselves as nonm-smokers & think like non-smkoers so we don't have to always be so aware of having that guard up. For example, I posted about this before, I think a couple of months ago so sorry to anyone who has seen it before. I had a really stressful situation at work & I was absolutely shaking with fury, even told off a co-worker. I was so angry & upset, nobody on my floor wanted to even come near me, excepet my friend & former smoking buddy. He came into my office, asked what happened, if I was OK, & if I wanted a smoke. Wazz, I did not even think and I heard myself saying, "No, I don't smoke", because I no longer made that association. That doesn't mean I'm done, I'm still an addict & I have to keep that guard up but it becomes second nature. You'll get there, Wazz & beyond there. We all will. We just hav eot keep doing what we're doing. Ok so everyones goal is ultimatly to be smoke free and nic free.I undersdtand that just wish it wasnt so hard and so much work to accomplish. It truly takes 90% of your daily energy to just say no. I hope at some point it does get easier but if it gets easier arent we in more danger of relapsing for letting our gaurd down? This is right up my alley! I have not had a cig for 282 days. I tried going nic free and made six days before I realized that I wasn't ready to go that far. I thought that nic left the body after 72 hours and if I made it that far, I was home free! I thought wrong. Whether it's psychological or just a nic addiction, I thought wrong. One of the reasons I might have been wrong is that I just recently found out that my inability to stop may be due to misusing the gum itself. I thought that I could wean off by cutting the squares into small pieces. I just found out that this is using way to little. The result is to create cravings worse than getting off cigs! That's just what I had!!!!! For a long time I complained of cravings being an annoying buzz, constant but always low level. I might have unwittingly been creating my own bad result thinking I was being smart about it. I'm starting again, using it the way my research has showed. Use whole pieces and gradually space them further and further apart!
