I have a friend in exactly the same situation as you Mr. Ed. She smoked for years and years and then gave up about 5 years ago only to now find she has the same problem as you with the bones under the teeth. I'll join in and send the apple sauce my mother made when she was last here. It's been in the fridge for a bit but it should be OK.... Hi Ed! I've lost 4 molars and have to have 2 implants in other areas. The reason? - you guessed it - smoking caused gum problems - caused bone loss - caused my teeth to literally turn loose. At the moment I'm looking at several thousands of dollars of dental work. My mom was an orthodontal assistant, and I've always taken excellent care of my teeth. Couldn't win out over the smoke though. The good news is that after you quit, the bone mass will often increase. My x-rays look much better than they did a few years ago. Not cravin', never cavin'. Wow, I learned something today. I didn't realize that smoking would harm my teeth (other than make them a lovely shade of yellow...) Hope everything goes well for you and your chops. Just another reminder of how smoking is just not good for anything. Hello Mr. Horse See a periodontist. About 15 years ago I had bone graphs done in several areas that saved 4 molars and two smokers teeth in the front. I have since lost one of the four molars last year the other 3 are hanging in. I just found out a couple years ago that smoking did it. I aalso just got through completing a second series with a periodontist where they raised the gum lines so you can get them cleaned. BTW, Coenzyme Q10, I heard fights the disease. Also buy some of these single tooth specialty toothbrushes put out by GUM, called End Tuff model 308. Sunstar Inc located in Chicago is the manufacture and will ship them to you. $3US per brush and very hard to find in a drug store. Google them or try your dentist. Mister Ed, Thank you for sharing your story and letting it be a lesson to everyone else. I would advise you to speak to your MD about this as gum disease has been linked to an increase risk of heart attack and you can still take preventative steps now. Danielle, Bilingual Support Specialist

Sorry to hear that Mr. Ed. But thank you for letting people know the effect that smoking can have. I will be baking some horse cookies in the morning, I will make some extra soft ones for my favorite horse. Oh I sympathise with you Mr. Ed. I may be one of the older quitters but I had root planing done when I was in college, then again when I was about 30 something and 5 years ago and now I'm having my last quad done this month. They have to scraoe under the gum to remove the plaque. Novacain helps but it is an unpleasant experience. I'm flossing and using the oral B elec toothbrush. That plus not smoking should help. As part of dental exam they screen for mouth cancer now. They may not look like Oprah's but they're mine and I plan to keep them. judy My Milage: My Quit Date: 8/3/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 98 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 784 Amount Saved: $196.00 Life Gained: Days: 14 Hrs: 9 Mins: 24 Seconds: 58
