Thanks Phillip. I've read it before and it is as true now as it was then. :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 2/18/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 203 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 8,143 Amount Saved: $1827 Life Gained: Days: 33 Hrs: 10 Mins: 46 Seconds: 59

Rob I am bumping this for you.
Learn patience, particularly with yourself. When I am patient with myself I can get far more accomplished. I do not respond well to demands by others and I do not respond well when I am demanding, harsh and impatient with myself. Learn as well to be gentle and care for yourself. As smokers we were pretty harsh with out bodies and with our mind. We administered a mind altering and body breaking drug every few minutes and many times a day. Time will heal and please, please, please be patient, gentle and caring with yourself and your quit. You are a great quitter and you are doing an amazing job. Congratulations on first deciding to quit and second carrying out that desire and staying quit. This is a challenging and sometimes very demanding job. For me to be quit I know that I need to take a stand and be very very very true to myself. If you have something that you feel is a medical condition and needs attention see your doctor, if you have a psychological issue see your counsellor or pastor or your doctor. Post here to get support and find more about the process, tactics and practice of other quitters. I (even though I have had my fingers slapped for this) maintain that the craves, urges whatever you might call them contunue for quite some time. I have those urges often and they happen sometimes in a very intense way. I need, often, to get to how I will cope with this quit very quickly. I distract, turn around and just plain go in the opposite direction so that I do not smoke. I have a firm and very official contract with myself to not smoke. This quit I have had a lot of chest problems, infections and bronchial problems, some of this is connected to swimming and I believe that my lungs are just fragile. Sometimes I am in a lot of pain and I must swim and maintain my body to remain quit. I had pain when I was hacking and choking from the build up of crap in my lungs. Headaches, dizzyness and other problems psychosomatic? I have no idea. I have had every test in the book and I got a diagnosis of an atypical migraine headache. What do I do? I have to find a way to relax, and not panic over the symptoms that wash over me and erode my confidence. I have to get back to my agreement with myself to not smoke. I very much have to remember that no one has ever been killed by quitting. My health is actually better than it has ever been and this is directly related to being quit. Psychological issues arise, how to deal with emotion, how to deal with extra time and how to change habits. I deal with this everyday. I post here often and seek counselling as needed. Please remember that if you are seeking counselling to consider that this is working out an addiction and a specialist in addiction will be helpful and a smoking cessation specialist will be of even more benefit. Beware (as you know) of easy solutions, there are none and if someone i
I distract, turn around and just plain go in the opposite direction so that I do not smoke.
...and ultimately, this is exactly how it's done. :) Breaking associations and learning new things at the same time can be so overwhelming and sometimes, simply exhausting. At 200 days (after smoking for years), I think it's completely normal to still be dealing with issues ...at least it was for me. In 200 more days, the view will be significantly different from what it is now. With every day that passes, we're one day closer. It may not come fast, but it's undeniable progress with huge rewards. "Take the long way home" (with music up and the windows down!) Nice post, Phillip :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 2/2/2005 Smoke-Free Days: 573 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 11,470 Amount Saved: $2045.61 Life Gained: Days: 60 Hrs: 17 Mins: 25 Seconds: 4

Phillip, this is such a thoughtful, kind and compassionate post. I really agree with your counseling advice. I live in a small-ish town and so there aren't a lot of choices, but I had great success with an addiction specialist. She didn't have experience with nicotine addiction specifically, but her knowledge and skills really did the trick for me. You have gained a whole month -- 31 days of beautiful life. Congratulations, Phillip! River, This is a great thread for those newcomers wondering where they fit into the scheme of things. Your honesty is well warranted and received. Many members go through minimal craves and temptations and their journey is an easier one. We do not down play any quit, but you have made us realize that it also may not be the walk in the park many say it is. Please continue to share your honesty and experience, it is a necessary read for all :) Keep Strong, Josie _____________________ The SSC Support Team.
