No calories there! * Pick your fast food carefully, instead of the traditional burger & fries why not hit a sandwich stand or a sushi house? * Burn those excess calories by taking a stroll after lunch. What about sticking to big servings of Chinese vegetables and Chop Suey and Szechuan shrimp - leave out the noodles and the rice and concentrate on scarfing as many tasty veggies as you can from the take out... tell them to go easy on the oil in the wok... I am also afraid that stoping smoking is going to make me start to gain more weight as well. I just had my 2nd baby 11 months ago and I could still use to loose 70 lbs. I am stocking up on diet foods and crystal light (that stuff is good, its only 10 calories a bottle and it ain't as blah as drinking water) My big thing is fast food. I live in the city and its too easy to go get it. I too was afraid of gaining weight. BUT I have actually lost 2 lbs. I am not skipping meals, most days. I have a bowl of cereal in the morning, so I am NOT starved by lunch. I got some 99% fat free jerky, and I do munch on some lifesavers or gummi bears or gummy worms.... The last couple nights instead of using the dinner plate, I used the next smaller size (sandwich plate) I do better with PORTION control... eating smaller meals more often, using a small bowl for a snack.. and drinking lots and lots of water. Do it, Richi! and find a couple of minutes a day to walk around your workplace two or three or four times a day to start off some kind of exercise regimen... I just heard or read, maybe in here, that every 1 pound of extra fat we carry represents 4 lbs on each knee... Lose it or lose it!! That means I'm carrying 200 extra pressure on my already arthritic knees!! Hi Richie, I'm totally with the others on this one. You can minimise the weight gain but you can't minimise cancer or emphysima. I used to argue with people that smoking helped me to control my weight, until someone told me that my smoking was affecting my body (heart lungs etc...) like a hundred pounds of weight would. So, even though I was a sickly 130lbs, my body was working overtime thinking it was supporting around 230lbs. pretty good eh? NOT Anyway, I quit a year and a half ago, and yes, I've put on weight but then my weight went up and down while I was a smoker too. I've gained a grand total of 30lbs and have lost roughly 10 of that. I would encourage you to stop smoking - you'll be doing your body a huge favour not to mention the peace of mind you'll have once that's out of the way. Also the rewards of not smoking are tremendous!!!! They can be a huge motivator to keep the quit! The first thing I noticed was that I always had money on me. no more spending cash hand over fist to smoke...nope. you'll notice all sorts of little and wonderful things once you kick that nicodemon to the curb. Hey Richi82! Congrats on losing the weight! If you really want to quit smoking than you are going to have to concede that you will likely gain some weight. But there is no reason to believe that you would gain back all that you lost. Secondly, look at the big picture, you lost the weight, so you already know how to do that. Right now which is more important, giving up the cigarettes that are killing you, or gaining some more weight? Weight Gain was a huge fear for me too, Richie. I finally just got rid of the fear and gave myself permission to gain a few pounds while I work through the quit, and now i'm working on loosing it again. Richi82, Gaining weight when quitting smoking is a common concern. However not everyone gains weight after quitting. Some people do, but usually only five or six pounds. Two things seem to cause this weight gain. First, your body metabolism slows down when you quit, so you don't need as much food as when you were smoking. Second, you may use food to replace cigarettes and end up eating a bit more than before. If you keep up with the habits you have now, you should do fine. You may have to find some time to get some physical activity to balance yourself out. Danielle, Bilingual Health Educator
