MJ The meter is really a great tool, but never forget that it is also a relative measurement. 1 day can be an eternity for somesone who never thought they could quit. And if that person did just one day they should be every bit as proud as if they had mastered a year because it is all about the journey inwardly and outwardly... nonic My Milage: My Quit Date: 12/25/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 452 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 13,560 Amount Saved: $4,746.00 Life Gained: Days: 84 Hrs: 5 Mins: 51 Seconds: 7

Islandgirl: That's it exactly, "What was I thinking"? In reference to smoking when we were smoking we were probably thinking less than complimentary things concerning ourselves. Perhaps these were not conscious thoughts, but somewhere in our internal universe, we were thinking self-destruction, self denial or some other less than useful things about ourselves. I know I was anyway, I am the king of self repudiation, but I am getting better everyday and smoking cessation is an outward indication of that sea change... MJ Thats great to hear. Stick with the plan that works for you. There are many theories about how to quit and opinons about what works best, but the main indgredients are our own will and knowledge about ourselves. This quit is all about you and you alone, and there is no one on the planet who knows more about you than your own good self. Listen closely and understand why you choose to smoke. Eventually you will find a way to choose not to smoke. Nonic: Thanks for asking! I think I have it figured out now and tomorrow will be 2 weeks (again) smoke free. Have also readjusted some medications, so I am no longer so sleepy during the day, which was my trigger that caused me to fail before. Still using NRT gum, but even that is becoming less-all in all, life is good. Although my quit meter is not so spectacular, I have smoked only 5 packs since January 2, which is far better than the pack a day habit I had which would have amounted to about 78 packs! That in itself is a huge accomplishment :) MJ My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/7/2008 Smoke-Free Days: 13 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 325 Amount Saved: $143.00 Life Gained: Days: 1 Hrs: 18 Mins: 13 Seconds: 42

Islandgirl, I am so with you on that. I got a little booklet, with my patches, & it has a quit calendar in it. I now put the money saved & the # of cig's not smoked on the calendar. It feels soo great to wake up in the morning & take that wonderful feeling deep breath. I am so proud of me & all of you. Keep it up. Nonic, have to agree with you~~the meter is the best thing out there! I love watching that days not smoking number grow every day! I think it was a HUGE motivating factor in my quit. All you newbies..make sure you set your meter and check it often. It'll make you feel even better about your quit, well, that and the ability to breathe easier, plus no more stinky clothes, no more sneaking out for a smoke and thinking you have fooled anyone when you come back reeking of tobacco, with the nasty stains on your fingers and teeth...EWW!! What WAS I thinking all of those years?? Keep the quit!! MJ How goes it, are you getting a good sense of what the addiction is all about for you? I think that different people smoked for a number of reasons, but the most important thing we can do for ourselves is to understand our personal relationship to cigarettes. There is a reason we smoke and finding that reason or reasons is key to developing different behaviors and modes of thought that allow us to put the stuff away for good... chico Thank you for your kind thoughts. Keep to the road, you are stacking up days bales of hay. One of the things that kept me going was that meter. There is something about seeing it tick over that makes you want to push the addiction furhter and further from your life. Just keep putting one foot and one thought in front of the other. You do not need cigarettes, the tobacco industry needs you, well your money anyway.
