Pat,
I am SO grateful that you chose to share this awful tragedy with us. It helps. It helped me realize, more than ever, that this is the path I want to stay on. Like you, I have lost my ex-husband (not to addiction but to suicide...) so, in my mind, even though I am re-maried, I am the only one that my daughter has in this world. So this one is for her. She already lost a parent - cannot let her go through life without me around.
Thank you and God Bless you and your family!
Cristina

Sunshine, thanks for letting me know this thread helped you.  Your feedback helps me heal.  I hope you're happy to be quit and enjoying all the blessings your life brings you.

Hi Pen and MM...good to see you both still here at SSC giving back to this great site.

Halloween will be a tough day for my family this year but it marks a milestone that will hopefully bring some warm memories as time blurs the pain and sense of loss.  Humans are remarkably resilient creatures.  Mentally and physically.  I hope my quit has spared my children the loss of both parents from smoking related illness.  I will never smoke again.  Maybe someone else who's still smoking or thinking of lighting up again will read this thread and decide to quit before their families must endure this kind of scenario too.  It really could happen to you.  I was so sure it would never happen to me.

On a positive note, I've gone back to school as part of getting my life back on track.  When I graduate I'm planning on looking for a job in a small community near the ocean.  I'm going to be a medical assistant and I look forward to helping others in a real hands-on-kind-of-way.  Who knows, maybe my experience with quitting smoking and the contents of this thread will make a difference to a lot of people in ways I haven't even thought of yet.

To quote one of our members here, "Never look back.  The future is ahead."

All my best,
Pat

Hi Pat,

This thread is far too real to just drop off the first page and into obscurity. People need to know your story; it will help them in their fight to beat their nicotine addiction. I hope you understand my motive for bumping.

Best Wishes

Hi Pen,
Thank you for asking after me and I am doing well.  I'm still picking up the pieces of my life and putting them back together again though.  It takes time, but I have plenty of that I do believe the future has good things in store.  No need to ever apologize to me but thank you for considering my feelings.  I do understand why the message here could be important for someone, though I will probably never know who has benefited from it.  I've actually cried sad but healing tears again just seeing this bumped and I do still need to shed those healing tears so I do thank you for them.

I've read the entire thing again and tried to put my feelings into perspective with the outpouring of love and support you all gave me in the darkest hours of my life.  Thank you.  I reached out to all of SSC by starting this thread when I was at my wits end with worry, helplessness and fear.  I never expected anything tragic like this to happen in my life.  None of us do.  SSC has been a big part of my life since I quit, so I came here for comfort.  What I've received in return by starting this thread has been well worth any sadness or loss I still feel when I see it.  My grief is still fresh.  In time, I expect to heal enough that I'll be able to see this bumped and read the messages of support without the loss I feel now.

So please feel free to go ahead and bump this whenever you want, ask questions or make comments.  It's a form of therapy if you will and I welcome an opportunity to see if it helps others in any way.  If it can help even one person even seriously think about stopping smoking before it's too late, then I'll happily bump it myself.

So, I'm off to get my life in order and continue my healing...sans cigarettes!

Love to all and many thanks for your continued support in my life.
Pat

Sorry Pat but this true-life thread conveys too powerful a message to let it drift down and off the board.

I hope you are well and I hope you understand why I bumped it.
