JDK Thread #32

***peeks her nose over the garden fence and smiles***

Glad to see a JDK thread and Kev look at just how far you've come!

Sorry your local pub closed down.  Just goes to show you how much influence you have on the neighborhood and the world.

Is little Gracey loving her sweet smelling Uncle who doesn't haunt pubs or bus stops?  You'll soon have a chance to get out in some lovely warm weather with her and maybe you can even meet some new friends who don't rely on mind altering substances to enjoy themselves.  Have you thought of joining a music club, local hermits gathering or some association where you can meet people you have things in common with?  How about, well, sheesh, even dating just to give your Mum something to talk about???  I'd rather see you in your hermit state, working and enjoying your family than off with that other lot.  Hang tough my friend, you're turning into a new and improved JDK with a whole new world waiting to be explored.

Hugs back at'cha
Pat

Hey JDK there, Lots of us learned about you from Patrick and others who were in constant lookout for you over the last 6 months or so.  The last I heard Patrick was trying to get you off some kind of paddle boat you said you were going on and disappeared.  I was so into keeping busy with my quit reading posts on this site I started running into numbered posts from you like this one.  They caught my attention and I think I ended up reading them all even though you were never at this site when I quit.  Anyway long story short thanks for entertaining me with your witty posts.  It was fun to follow the drama of what you were going through.  It's interesting now that you are more than a year quit you have much more of a calmness and confidence in your quit, that's a great thing.  As far as your sleep problems I would suggest exercise and getting outside in the light when possible.  These can really help with sleep cycles immensely.  Anyway nice to meet you and hope we here more from you in the future.
Ron

Hey JDK!  I haven't been on in a while and I'm so glad I got to see your post.  Congrats - you are doing a great job and it will get easier!  You can do it - but it's time to try gradually coming out of your shell and getting into the real world (but I agree avoid you triggers as much as you can).  You'll feel better!
Hugs!

Hi Kev.  It's great to see you again!  I've often wondered how you were doing.  I remember you having some difficult times, so I'm thrilled that you're still smoke-free.  I, too, have been fighting the inability to sleep, pretty much since the day I quit.  I finally broke down and went to the good doc. and he prescribed me some sleeping pills to help me out.  I dislike the idea of taking meds., but I was at the point of non-functioning.  I only take one every couple of nights, and am finally starting to feel like everyone else does after a good night's sleep.
Again, it's great to see you.  I hope you'll be able to stop by more often.

Hi guys,

Well it has been a long time so I thought i'd write a JDK thread to explain myself and to hopefully encourage any hardcore nicojunkies to get on the quit train.

For the newbies who escaped my threads :

Whilst I was probably not the heaviest smoker (60 to 100 a day at the weekends and around 25 a day during the week), I was or at least seemed to be one of the bigger addicts around here on the SSC. I went through all sorts of quit aids before ending up doing it cold turkey. I had also tried cold turkey several times before and not succeeded. The support I got here was a major factor in my success. Normally I would blow my quit halfway through this wonderful support by going to the pub!

Where I am today :

I know I am over a year smoke free now. Thats an amazing achievement in my books. Quitting smoking is one of the best things you can do for your life. I only cough when I have a cold. I didn't notice my cough but others did. I don't always think of smoking any more. Thats a good thing too.

My whole way of life had to change. I stopped going to pubs as that was a quit killer (my fave pub then closed down). I stopped travelling on buses (bus stops were also a quit killer). This freed up a lot of my free time (in fact about 95% of the time thats not allocated to work).

It was surprisingly easy to slip into a hermit like state as all of my friends were really pub people so I never saw them any more. All my workmates were just that and I am sure thats about as much as we can handle of each other.

From July of last year onwards I have been fighting constant tiredness but inability to sleep. Some days are better than others but generally I am in a near sleep state.

I do however, manage to break the hermitism sometimes and go for a nice walk in the rare english sun. This is the only real exercise I get really.

My parents still try to get me out and about and I gladly go out with them as long as it is not to the pub or a bus stop. One day I may trust myself not to go straight for the cigarettes in these occasions but my trust levels are still way too low at the moment.

It is still one day at a time, but I have managed to string together many days at a time now. One day I will also tackle my tiredness and get to writing here way more.

My respect and hand go out to all of you who try. Keep at it.

HUGS from Kev
