I have made it thru one whole day at this crazy job I have without smoking.... I do have a headache though!  About to go to my algebra class so I think I've got some smooth sailing tonight......but I'm ready for those triggers just in case!  Thanks everyone for the support!

Great work!

The symptoms you are experiencing are completely normal and indicate that your body is healing.  As you quit smoking you can experience an uncomfortable cough. You can start to cough up black/brown mucous. What is happening is that your body's Cilia (which are tiny hair-like particles that line your lungs) are in a healing process.

They are first paralysed and your body does not want to produce any mucus, therefore a dry cough sets in. As the cilia begin to heal themselves they start to clean all areas of your lungs. This is where you start to cough up all that awful mucus.

These symptoms can last days or weeks after you quit smoking. The healing is a long process of change, even though some of the benefits come more quickly than others. Try drinking more water, herbal tea and even cough drops or candy. Sitting in the bathroom with the shower running or using a humidifier at night may also help to dislodge mucus.

The shaking you mentioned is also common.  Your hands and fingers may tremble slightly and you may experience increased perspiration. However, the tremor is usually minor, and will subside as your body gets used to not smoking.

How long will this last? The first few weeks after quitting.

Tips to help: Frequent warm baths or showers can help dispel both the perspiration and the tremor. If you are concerned, consult your doctor to determine whether it is severe enough to warrant medication.

If you have a symptom that persists or seems worse than you expected, you should immediately consult a doctor. Its possible that your smoking has been masking symptoms of some illness, and when you stop smoking the symptoms abruptly become noticeable.

Smoking does mask symptoms, so it is important to really know what your body is going through.  Regular appointments with your doctor can be beneficial to rule out anything medical.

Members, what are your experiences with shaking and coughing as a withdrawal symptom?

Well...made it thru lunch.  Went to the park with the windows rolled down and sat and worked on homework.  Then went to the store and bought some cough drops.  I'm already coughing?????  I have had the shakes all day, I don't know what that's all about.  Drinking water, and I'm so excited that this patch is doin it's job!!

Good morning quitters!!

I smoked my last cigarette about 830am and I am now wearing my patch.  I feel pretty okay right now.  I did get too hungry and got the high speed wobbles, but just ate a sausage biscuit and now I'm starting to feel better.  I brought plenty of fruit with me to work today and I have plenty of work to keep me busy.  I am feeling really good about this quit!  The way I felt when I woke up this morning definitely removed all doubt.  So ready to start feeling better!  I have homework to keep me busy at lunch and have chewing gum and straws ready for any triggers that may pop up.  Okay....goin to get some ice water
