Slogan: Time takes time. Obvious right? Well, I sometimes get impatient and, therefore, anxious, which can lead to a slip. I have to constantly remind myself that this recovery can only be done one day at a time--not five, ten, or twenty, and be done. There is no 'done'. Time takes time reminds us to be patient with ourselves and the process.

Emotional balance (Page 270, Narcotics Anonymous Basic Text)

"Emotional balance is one of the first results of meditation, and our experience bears this out."

Though each of us defines "emotional balance" a little differently, all of us must find it. Emotional balance can mean finding and maintaining a positive outlook on life, regardless of what may be happening around us. To some, it might mean an understanding of our emotions that allows us to respond, not react, to our feelings. It can mean that we experience our feelings as intensely as we can while also moderating their excessive expression.

Emotional balance comes with practice in prayer and meditation. We get quiet and share our thoughts and hopes and concerns with the God of our understanding. Then we listen for guidance, awaiting the power to act on that direction.

Eventually, our skills in maintaining near-balance get better, and the wild up-and-down emotional swings we used to experience begin to settle. We develop an ability to let others feel their feelings; we have no need to judge them. And we fully embrace our own personal range of emotions.

Just for Today: Through regular prayer and meditation, I will discover what emotional balance means to me.

Stick with the Winners reminds us that there are already people who have what we want. No problem is new. The winners will give us the guidance we need, if we just ask for it and/or trail them.

I decided to mix two slogans today. One, I believe was posted in some form earlier, and one is a new one. Live and Let Live and Take What You Like and Leave the Rest. Recovery programs, whether they are open membership or not, can be difficult as we grapple for what works for us and how to apply certain concepts and suggestions. While listening and sticking with the winners can be helpful, especially when we have no answers that seems to work, the programs are our individual programs. We mold them to our needs. We can't control what others do. All we can do is be helpful (influential) when asked and let go of the results; live and let live. At the end of every 12 Step meeting, we are also reminded to take what we want from the meeting and to leave whatever we we're not interested in. That leaves us with choices. We are under no obligation whatsoever to respond to anything that anyone does or says at anytime, but if we decide to respond we are asked to respond only to the request and to be as helpful as we can. God loves fools, too. (As a matter of fact, we might be here for our entertainment value.) Why can't we?

Late Have I Loved You

Late have I loved you, O Beauty, so ancient and so new, late have I loved you!

And behold, you were within me and I was outside, and there I sought for you, and in my deformity I rushed headlong into the well-formed things that you have made.

You were with me, and I was not with you. Those outer beauties held me far from you, yet if they had not been in you, they would not have existed at all.

You called, and cried out to me and broke open my deafness; you shone forth upon me and you scattered my blindness.

You breathed fragrance, and I drew in my breath and I now pant for you.

I tasted, and I hunger and thirst; you touched me, and I burned for your peace.

Saint Augustine was bishop of Hippo in North Africa. This prayer is from his book, "Confessions."
