Another proud January veteran coming up on the big fat five years this new year's day.  I've said it before and I'll say it again, this place changed my life and this place saved my life.

I quit because I wanted to be healthier but mostly because I wanted to have a baby.  And at long last that dream will be a reality this February 26th if all goes according to plan.  We are elated.  And my son will never know a mother who is a smoker.  With any luck, Daddy will be able to quit on his birthday but if not then, on his own time.  I won't pressure him but I have effectively been able to evict him from the kitchen doorway when he lights up.  Divine progress.

I won't lie; it's an ugly, pock marked, crevassed road to quit smoking.  You struggle, you trip and twist ankles and writhe and sweat and cough and fume.  You gain weight and unmask illnesses you didn't think you had.  You shout and argue and cry and unmask relationship issues you didn't think you had.  You suddenly find a voice you didn't think you had.  You defend yourself, you chuck out the toxic people in your life, you find the way that forks just north of your new beginning and ride baby ride.  You exercise and eat chocolate and sleep and dream and then by some miracle of miracles you heal.  You become a non-smoker.  You remember smoking like a faraway dream.  Your personal Never(again)land.  That place you went when you were a child and didn't want to grow up.  You quit, you grow up.  It's nice here.

To this day I cannot believe I found the strength to do it.  It remains the most wonderful gift I've ever given myself and I wouldn't go back down that road for a lottery jackpot.  I wish all the January quitters every success in the world.

To those I've known for five years, I thought I'd finally let you see what I look like.   Hope this finds you all very well.

Not necessarily a January quitter, but will be going through probably the toughest stretch throughout the month. I just quit 4 days ago, using chantix, and really not going through any rough times yet, however there are still many "first" to overcome before I can officially call myself a "non-smoker". Many of those first will come in the next month.

Of course you can Briana!

Good for you for getting right back to your quit after a slip!  That takes determination - that kind of attitude will get you far in a quit.

What did you learn from this recent slip you had?

Hey Pat.  It's great to see you and congratulations on 5 years - wow!

I have to brag a bit too - Mr. J and I will be 4 years quit on Jan. 3rd - whoop!!   (with an amazing  $11,000.00 saved each - OMG!  $22,000.00 total, that's crazy!! )Plus all the life we've gained, plus, plus, plus.  The bonuses of quitting smoking just keep getting better.   Jazz

Hi Ashley,
Maybe a January quitter from a while back will get this ball rolling?  Looking forward to celebrating 5 years of freedom next month!  If I can do it, I think anyone can.

For you want to be quitters reading this, you just need to have the desire to quit be stronger than the desire to smoke.  A plan helps, and you can get one of those right here at SSC!!!  See your doctor if you feel the need for medication to help you through the initial withdrawal period.  Read, read and read some more.  Knowledge is the key that will set you free..............
All the best,
Pat
