What to Expect when you Quit!

Plan your quit date so the first few days there are fewer demands. Let your loved ones know you are doing something really important, but difficult, so ask them to be kind and understanding. If they won't, kick 'em out. Read Allen Carr's book. Stock up on low calorie treats. My faves were nonfat yogurt, cottage cheese, and, ok, peanut butter. But just a spoonful at a time. Drink lots and lots of water. Get excited about it and be very proud of yourself. Don't bash your husband in the head with a skillet. My Milage: My Quit Date: 5/13/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 166 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 3,320 Amount Saved: $1,826.00 Life Gained: Days: 16 Hrs: 14 Mins: 28 Seconds: 44

Yes, changing your routine really helps. If you have tough cravings in the morning, have your shower first instead of coffee first, or have your coffee in a different room. Or have tea if coffee really bothers you. You will feel sleepy or foggy the first couple of weeks, you may also have some trouble sleeping, your body is recouperating, so pamper yourself as much as you can. Some people had sore throats, some had tighness in the chest. Your body is going through a lot of healing the first few weeks. We put alot of awful chemicals in our bodies by smoking, it takes some time to heal. :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/5/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 235 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 5,875 Amount Saved: $2,479.25 Life Gained: Days: 28 Hrs: 16 Mins: 4 Seconds: 43

Rearrange your furniture in the rooms you smoked in, to reduce triggers. If you drive to work, get your husband to buy you a new car. ;) Or, just plan a different route. GET A NOZZLY THING!! Throw all of Lainey's ideas in your "crave basket" for work too. Add things to do for breaks to replace smoking...crossword puzzles, gameboy, etc. My Milage: My Quit Date: 8/25/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 61 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,830 Amount Saved: $356.85 Life Gained: Days: 5 Hrs: 12 Mins: 37 Seconds: 49

GREAT idea, Lainey! I suggest talking to your doctor or healthcare provider. Lots of pampering, rest, and rewards are so important during those first few days and weeks. Another suggestion is to GET RID OF ALL SMOKING items (lighters, ash trays, and of course ALL cigarettes). Lots of Newbies come in here asking questions! Let's try to create a thread, in chronological order with alot of the answers in one place, about what they can expect to happen, as they become a non smoker! First of all, you should plan ahead, do the program here, and read as many posts as you can, in order to gain more knowledge about quitting smoking. Set a quit date and prepare, if are going to use NRT's or prescription products, get those ready or if you are going cold turkey, get hard candy, gum, straws, lots of cold water and a list of things to do to keep you really busy the first few days. :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/5/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 234 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 5,850 Amount Saved: $2,468.70 Life Gained: Days: 28 Hrs: 15 Mins: 54 Seconds: 58
