minn,   These are excellent exposure steps! Continue your exposure work and take it one step at a time!

I live close to the airport, and I never used to go with to drop people off or pick them up, I am so anxious, now I go with every time.  I hope this way i'll become more familiar with going there.

Members,

Make this fear an exposure goal! There are many ways to overcome this fear, exposure being one of the best ways.

Remember to start off with small goals such as packing your suitcase or simply going to the airport & practicing being comfortable. Then move onto bigger goals like getting on the airplane & flying.

HI everyone.
I have been on a few long trips and its always been fine, but lately i'm scared again, basically for me it was since 9/11.  I have terrible fears and I almost have to be dragged to the airport.  When I got to toronto now, i've been taking the train, its long, its 8 hours to chicago, then about 12 hours to niagara falls, where as the flight is 2 hours. No one can understand why I wont get on a plane.  My family fly here all the time, and its so quick.  My hubby wont take the train, so he hasnt been to see my family in 5 years.  I got a ton of books on the fear of flying and they seem to help a bit. I feel i'm missing out on going places now because i'm so scared.   I have flown much longer flights before and I was alone without my hubby and I was fine. Next time I hope to fly, and I will go to my doctor and get some meds or something so I can basically sleep most of the trip.   My phsycologist *spelling* said that what most people dont know is that you can get from the airline stewardess tranquilizers on a plane if you just ask, but i prefer to take something that I get from my own doc. It seems like with the anxiety my fear is more pronounced, when I took those longer flights I didnt have the same fear I haeve now, I was scared, but  I wasnt petrified..

Hello there Georgie , well thats quite a problem . I know you are doing very well with the bus travel , great stuff .
As Brenna said , maybe you could see your doctor for some meds . And also maybe explain to your boss that you would love to but am having problems atm if you could do that .
I personally havnt been on a plane , was nervous enough before i started having panic attacks ! But saying that i would love to take my kids to disneyland one day . My family go nearly every year and its hard seeing their videos having such fun , it looks amazing .
My dad and brother were terrified of flying before they went but like Dazed mommy said once on the plane it was great . Now they dont mind at all .Now my dad used to suffer panic attacks and so does my aunty who lives in America , she has flown over here many times .

All of my relatives live in my parent's country... and I want to visit them. My husband is going to go see his grand parents there and I am not going. This is such a devastation for me but I know that I want to be feeling great if I ever can go again. I'm too afraid to go. I'm hopeful for one day that I will have the courage to go.

Hi

I too "think" I have a fear of flying... BUT everytime I have had to fly after FREAKING about it inside for weeks.. once I'm on the plane it's fine.

I lucked out and we drove to Disneyland / San Diego last time so it wasn't a stress but we're thinking about flying next time.  Gas is getting to expensive to be driving from Canada..   For me the statistics help a lot...  I would put them on here but I know for some they might cause a bit of panic.. LOL.. they would have for me before...  ha!  But the chances of things happening in your everyday life are a lot higher than something ever happening when you're flying.... Enough said :)

I would like to travel with my kids once our youngest is a few years older .. so I know this is a challenge I'm definately going to have to do myself again.  Places we don't even have an option to drive...eek! :)

I have a huge fear in flying! I'm also afraid that I will not be able to go to the places I've been wanting to go, forever! But I'm hopeful that will change.... somehow.

Georgie,

This fear of flying is very normal! Members, can you share some of your experiences on planes?

It is important to do exposure exercises but you have to do them within your comfort zone. You need to be the judge if this is something that will push you too far out of your comfort zone. Consider all of your options and the costs and benefits of going on this trip. Will this advance your career? Is this a good option to gain exposure to flying? Can you challenge your anxious thoughts during the flight? You can also talk to your doctor about medications that you can use to help you deal with your anxiety while flying.

Members, please offer your input.

hi guys...

so i don't really 'do' transport.. i am starting to master catching the bus locally.. anyhow, today at work my supervisor mentioned that there might be enough money in the budget for me to fly to sydney with her for the presentations. i was like "oh wow, cool" but inside i was thinking "please let there not be enough money". the thing is, i haven't flown since i was 12.. so about 10 years and i didn't like it then.. now i have the panic problems too.

do you think there is anything wrong if i say to her that while i am really interested in the topic, i really do not like flying. i just think okay, it's not that i'm just scared of flying, it's that i have to manage the panic too and since i haven't been on a plane for a while i think it'd be better to do it in my own time with people i feel comfortable with (i have only known this woman a week).

or maybe i am just a big chicken?
one thing is for sure - i worry too much!
