Thanks so much, its reassuring to hear other people who have had the same symptoms etc :)

yes! i do remember getting that. it definitely passed.

what i did was make a point of everyday writing down a short description of how i was feeling (ie, anxious, nauseous, tired, so on, both physical and anxiety-wise) and what medication i had taken. i then could monitor how things were changing and what affects were most prevelant when i went back to my doc. after about two months i stopped writing down anything, so i guess that's when i was "back on my feet" again. but it also reminds me that that burning inside thing totally happened to me. my biggest side effect was extreme fatigue, which also faded. it might be a good idea to write things down so you can see what's persisting - and also remind yourself later that things pass - which you can talk about with your doctor.

take it easy and be patient. it will get better though it's uncomfortable at first, especially when you are already anxious about bodily sensations!

hi lisa,

i'm on citalopram too...it's 12 weeks now. started like you from 10mg and working up. apparently (according to my doctor), anxiety needs a higher dose to treat than depression.

anyhow...it is normal to feel worse in the first few weeks. a lot of doctors prescribe an anti-anxiety pill to help you through this period since anxiety can be increased (ie clonazapam, lorazapam). this really helped me wait out the period until the anti-d started kicking in so you might want to ask your doc about it. it took awhile for me to feel steadier, but once i did i had no need for the anti-anxiety medication.

all i can say is that it's been remarkable what's happened since i've been on this medication. it did take awhile and it's still not 100%, but i'd forgotten what it was even like to be not constantly anxiety-ridden. i was very against meds for a long time and terrified and very anxious when i began them, but it's starting to allow me to get stable enough to get things together. keep this in mind and remember that the first few weeks are always bad, but gradually it will get a lot better.

best of luck.

Lisa,   Starting a new medication takes time. Your body has to adjust to the medication and its side effects. Timing can vary, depending on the dosage and type of medication you are taking.   Your doctor would be able to address these concerns. Have you made any follow-up appointments since you were first prescribed citalopram?   Continue to post Lisa and let us know how you are doing.     Sarah, Health Educator

Hi Lisa,

When I took pills, I could only do half of a 10mg pill, and it only really helped after a month or so of taking the pills.  At first it had the same affect as you're having, made me more anxiety prone, with the added "plus" of my appetite dropping.  But as far as what you feeling now, it may go on a bit longer...each person adjusts to the meds differently.  Hang in there, it will pass.

Ask your doc/psychologist about dropping down to 10mg...it might help your body readjust.

Hi, I've been on this for 3 and a half weeks, started on 10mgs for 10 days and up to 20mgs since. I initially felt better but since the end of the week I've been waking up anxious and agitated, this feeling dosen't really go away through the day although evenings have been better until tonight :( could this be the meds after all this time? how long can I expect it to go on? anyone can help would be greatly appreciated.
