lightheadness - how to overcome?

for 15 år siden 0 12049 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Brandie,

You are checking with your doctor and this is good.  You can then continue on with the program to help you find triggers and combat them with exposure therapy.  Ruling out the medical is one step toward progress.

Look to the positive and not when your next ache and pain will surface.

Just an update to my lightheadness. It has been further apart. I went a few days without any. Now today, i'm feeling a little anxious and have some lightheadness. Also, I just had a very short lived panic attack. Went away within seconds but still scared me a bit. I'm feeling a little shakey right now. I hate the feeling you are going to pass out. I have been worrying about some lower abdominal pain that is going away now. I think that is contributing to my anxiety. Anyways I see the Gynny for that on Monday. Think I may have some adhesions from prior c sections. It seems like one thing right after another just to keep me anxious. First my heart, then my brain w/ the lightheadness, now the stomach thing. Does it ever end. What will be my next ache and pain??

Brandie,

Have you asked your family physician about this? Have you ever been tested for allergies?
The members have also offered some good advice. I am not too sure about the lightheadness, so please let us know how you are doing,

Part of the challenge with getting over the lightheaded feeling is that it is easy to keep dwelling on it.  You may be telling yourself that you can't shake the dizzy feeling which causes you to be more lightheaded (and adds in other anxiety symptoms) which causes you to worry more.  This leads to a vicious cycle where more worry leads to more dizziness which leads to more anxiety.  First of all, if your doctor(s) has told you that it is anxiety, then you can start with reminding yourself that there is nothing physically wrong with you.

As counterintuitive as it may sound, the only way to deal with your lightheadedness is to accept it.  Tell yourself that it is only anxiety and that you are going to go on with your day no matter what.  You can start by walking to the next room or to the mailbox, etc.  This will show you that as lightheaded as you may feel, you are not going to pass out, the room is not spinning, and you are capable of walking in a straight line.  The goal is not to get rid of your lightheadedness but to teach yourself that it is of no consequence and that your mind is bluffing you.  This will at least stop feeding the anxiety and not make the cycle worse.  As you do this, you will get to a point where the light headed feeling will not bother you and eventually diminish.

It's kind of like walking with a rock in your shoe, and you can't take it out.  At first, it will nag you and hurt.  Once you are determined to keep walking, you will eventually stop thinking about it until you forget about it.

It sounds easier than it is.  I know since I go through it myself.  With a little practice and some of the homework on this website, you can go on.  I also recommend reading Hope and Health for Your Nerves by Dr. Claire Weekes.

Don't be discouraged.  It gets better.

Hello,

I totally know how you feel. I have this feeling of lightheadedness and that my eyes aren't focusing properly a lot. Some days are worse than others but lately it has been really bad. I find it gets really bad when I go into places with really strong fluorescent lighting...not sure why. When I get the feeling that my eyes aren't focusing right then I get anxious and feel like I am going to pass out. Any advice on how to deal with this lightheaded/not being able to focus properly feeling would be great!!

Thanks.

You know, i'm really beginning to think it's anxiety related. Because for the the last 2 days, my lightheadness went away and was replaced with a belly ache. It goes from my heart, to my brain, to my lungs to my stomach. Does this not sound like a case of the worries?? Now this morning I'm feeling a little anxious and my eyes are a little strange. I keep thinking once I work through every part of my body i will be ok.

But you know on the other hand early spring is the worst time for my allergies. I get a little cough and tightness around my sinus areas and a slight headache. I've noticed this pattern for the last several years. I have never had the lightheadness before but theres always a first for everything.

My dad expericiences the lightheadness as well and he truly believes it is what he eats. Food Allergy???? Very possible!!

Hi Brandie,

I know that everyone is different, but I've had periods in my life when I was having that off-balance feeling. For me, there were two things that caused that feeling  like walking with one leg shorter than the other or just feeling vertigo-ish.  One thing is my ears. My family has a history of ear issues, with allergy season being the worst. It gives you an unstable feeling when there is some congestion in the ear tubes (or whatever they're called.)  Also, I get that feeling when my lower back gets tight -- usually from sitting too much!   It becomes an anxiety problem when my little brain assumes that the unbalanced feeling means dizziness and that I'll have a panic attack.  I went through an awful time a few years ago when I had that feeling whenever I walked.. like I was very unstable and frail.  Turned out later that it was a severe dust allergy exacerbated by using over the counter nasal sprays to fix it. But, because I didn't know that it was, I became a near recluse because I thought it was anxiety-originated.

Have your doctors checked out the ear and allergy connection?

Brandie,

Not too sure about this one Brandie. Perhaps you could try taking 30 seconds between each shift in position.
For ex: Going from lying to sitting, take a 30 second pause before getting up to a standing position. Not too sure if this helps or not, so members, any suggestions?

With all my other anxiety symtoms fading gradually, why can't I get rid of this off balance feeling i've been having. I've been to an ENT doctor and my family doctor and noone can come up with anything but anxiety I guess. I still have to take a klonopin to get it to go away. Are there any suggested on what I need to do? The pshyc. doctor just wants to add more medicine, but i'm not real happy about that. The paxil has come a long way in getting me better, but this is the last of the real bothersome symptoms other than at times i feel like i'm jumping out of my chest.
